  • How to Write a Comparative Analysis

Throughout your academic career, you'll be asked to write papers in which you compare and contrast two things: two texts, two theories, two historical figures, two scientific processes, and so on. "Classic" compare-and-contrast papers, in which you weight A and B equally, may be about two similar things that have crucial differences (two pesticides with different effects on the environment) or two similar things that have crucial differences, yet turn out to have surprising commonalities (two politicians with vastly different world views who voice unexpectedly similar perspectives on sexual harassment).

In the "lens" (or "keyhole") comparison, in which you weight A less heavily than B, you use A as a lens through which to view B. Just as looking through a pair of glasses changes the way you see an object, using A as a framework for understanding B changes the way you see B. Lens comparisons are useful for illuminating, critiquing, or challenging the stability of a thing that, before the analysis, seemed perfectly understood. Often, lens comparisons take time into account: earlier texts, events, or historical figures may illuminate later ones, and vice versa.

Faced with a daunting list of seemingly unrelated similarities and differences, you may feel confused about how to construct a paper that isn't just a mechanical exercise in which you first state all the features that A and B have in common, and then state all the ways in which A and B are different. Predictably, the thesis of such a paper is usually an assertion that A and B are very similar yet not so similar after all. To write a good compare-and-contrast paper, you must take your raw data—the similarities and differences you've observed—and make them cohere into a meaningful argument. Here are the five elements required.

Frame of Reference .  This is the context within which you place the two things you plan to compare and contrast; it is the umbrella under which you have grouped them. The frame of reference may consist of an idea, theme, question, problem, or theory; a group of similar things from which you extract two for special attention; biographical or historical information. The best frames of reference are constructed from specific sources rather than your own thoughts or observations. Thus, in a paper comparing how two writers redefine social norms of masculinity, you would be better off quoting a sociologist on the topic of masculinity than spinning out potentially banal-sounding theories of your own. Most assignments tell you exactly what the frame of reference should be, and most courses supply sources for constructing it.  If you encounter an assignment that fails to provide a frame of reference, you must come up with one on your own.  A paper without such a context would have no angle on the material, no focus or frame for the writer to propose a meaningful argument.

Grounds for Comparison .  Let's say you're writing a paper on global food distribution, and you've chosen to compare apples and oranges. Why these particular fruits? Why not pears and bananas? The rationale behind your choice, the  grounds for comparison , lets your reader know why your choice is deliberate and meaningful, not random. For instance, in a paper asking how the "discourse of domesticity" has been used in the abortion debate, the grounds for comparison are obvious; the issue has two conflicting sides, pro-choice and pro-life. In a paper comparing the effects of acid rain on two forest sites, your choice of sites is less obvious. A paper focusing on similarly aged forest stands in Maine and the Catskills will be set up differently from one comparing a new forest stand in the White Mountains with an old forest in the same region. You need to indicate the reasoning behind your choice.

Thesis .  The grounds for comparison anticipates the comparative nature of your thesis. As in any argumentative paper, your thesis statement will convey the gist of your argument, which necessarily follows from your frame of reference. But in a compare-and-contrast, the thesis depends on how the two things you've chosen to compare actually relate to one another. Do they extend, corroborate, complicate, contradict, correct, or debate one another? In the most common compare-and-contrast paper—one focusing on differences—you can indicate the precise relationship between A and B by using the word "whereas" in your thesis:

Whereas  Camus perceives ideology as secondary to the need to address a specific historical moment of colonialism, Fanon perceives a revolutionary ideology as the impetus to reshape Algeria's history in a direction toward independence.

Whether your paper focuses primarily on difference or similarity, you need to make the relationship between A and B clear in your thesis. This relationship is at the heart of any compare-and-contrast paper.

Organizational Scheme .  Your introduction will include your frame of reference, grounds for comparison, and thesis. There are two basic ways to organize the body of your paper.

  • In  text-by-text , you discuss all of A, then all of B.
  • In  point-by-point , you alternate points about A with comparable points about B.

If you think that B extends A, you'll probably use a text-by-text scheme; if you see A and B engaged in debate, a point-by-point scheme will draw attention to the conflict. Be aware, however, that the point-by- point scheme can come off as a ping-pong game. You can avoid this effect by grouping more than one point together, thereby cutting down on the number of times you alternate from A to B. But no matter which organizational scheme you choose, you need not give equal time to similarities and differences. In fact, your paper will be more interesting if you get to the heart of your argument as quickly as possible. Thus, a paper on two evolutionary theorists' different interpretations of specific archaeological findings might have as few as two or three sentences in the introduction on similarities and at most a paragraph or two to set up the contrast between the theorists' positions. The rest of the paper, whether organized text- by-text or point-by-point, will treat the two theorists' differences.

You can organize a classic compare-and-contrast paper either text-by-text or point-by-point. But in a "lens" comparison, in which you spend significantly less time on A (the lens) than on B (the focal text), you almost always organize text-by-text. That's because A and B are not strictly comparable: A is merely a tool for helping you discover whether or not B's nature is actually what expectations have led you to believe it is.

Linking of A and B . All argumentative papers require you to link each point in the argument back to the thesis. Without such links, your reader will be unable to see how new sections logically and systematically advance your argument. In a compare-and contrast, you also need to make links between A and B in the body of your essay if you want your paper to hold together. To make these links, use transitional expressions of comparison and contrast ( similarly, moreover, likewise, on the contrary, conversely, on the other hand ) and contrastive vocabulary (in the example below,  Southerner/Northerner ).

As a girl raised in the faded glory of the Old South, amid mystical tales of magnolias and moonlight, the mother remains part of a dying generation. Surrounded by hard times, racial conflict, and limited opportunities, Julian,  on the other hand , feels repelled by the provincial nature of home, and represents a new Southerner, one who sees his native land through a condescending Northerner's eyes.

Comparing and Contrasting in an Essay | Tips & Examples

Published on August 6, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on November 11, 2022.

Comparing and contrasting is an important skill in academic writing . It involves taking two or more subjects and analyzing the differences and similarities between them.

Table of contents

When should i compare and contrast, making effective comparisons, comparing and contrasting as a brainstorming tool, structuring your comparisons, frequently asked questions about comparing and contrasting.

Many assignments will invite you to make comparisons quite explicitly, as in these prompts.

Some other prompts may not directly ask you to compare and contrast, but present you with a topic where comparing and contrasting could be a good approach.

One way to approach this essay might be to contrast the situation before the Great Depression with the situation during it, to highlight how large a difference it made.

Comparing and contrasting is also used in all kinds of academic contexts where it’s not explicitly prompted. For example, a literature review involves comparing and contrasting different studies on your topic, and an argumentative essay may involve weighing up the pros and cons of different arguments.

As the name suggests, comparing and contrasting is about identifying both similarities and differences. You might focus on contrasting quite different subjects or comparing subjects with a lot in common—but there must be some grounds for comparison in the first place.

For example, you might contrast French society before and after the French Revolution; you’d likely find many differences, but there would be a valid basis for comparison. However, if you contrasted pre-revolutionary France with Han-dynasty China, your reader might wonder why you chose to compare these two societies.

This is why it’s important to clarify the point of your comparisons by writing a focused thesis statement . Every element of an essay should serve your central argument in some way. Consider what you’re trying to accomplish with any comparisons you make, and be sure to make this clear to the reader.

Comparing and contrasting can be a useful tool to help organize your thoughts before you begin writing any type of academic text. You might use it to compare different theories and approaches you’ve encountered in your preliminary research, for example.

Let’s say your research involves the competing psychological approaches of behaviorism and cognitive psychology. You might make a table to summarize the key differences between them.

Or say you’re writing about the major global conflicts of the twentieth century. You might visualize the key similarities and differences in a Venn diagram.

A Venn diagram showing the similarities and differences between World War I, World War II, and the Cold War.

These visualizations wouldn’t make it into your actual writing, so they don’t have to be very formal in terms of phrasing or presentation. The point of comparing and contrasting at this stage is to help you organize and shape your ideas to aid you in structuring your arguments.

When comparing and contrasting in an essay, there are two main ways to structure your comparisons: the alternating method and the block method.

The alternating method

In the alternating method, you structure your text according to what aspect you’re comparing. You cover both your subjects side by side in terms of a specific point of comparison. Your text is structured like this:

Mouse over the example paragraph below to see how this approach works.

One challenge teachers face is identifying and assisting students who are struggling without disrupting the rest of the class. In a traditional classroom environment, the teacher can easily identify when a student is struggling based on their demeanor in class or simply by regularly checking on students during exercises. They can then offer assistance quietly during the exercise or discuss it further after class. Meanwhile, in a Zoom-based class, the lack of physical presence makes it more difficult to pay attention to individual students’ responses and notice frustrations, and there is less flexibility to speak with students privately to offer assistance. In this case, therefore, the traditional classroom environment holds the advantage, although it appears likely that aiding students in a virtual classroom environment will become easier as the technology, and teachers’ familiarity with it, improves.

The block method

In the block method, you cover each of the overall subjects you’re comparing in a block. You say everything you have to say about your first subject, then discuss your second subject, making comparisons and contrasts back to the things you’ve already said about the first. Your text is structured like this:

The most commonly cited advantage of distance learning is the flexibility and accessibility it offers. Rather than being required to travel to a specific location every week (and to live near enough to feasibly do so), students can participate from anywhere with an internet connection. This allows not only for a wider geographical spread of students but for the possibility of studying while travelling. However, distance learning presents its own accessibility challenges; not all students have a stable internet connection and a computer or other device with which to participate in online classes, and less technologically literate students and teachers may struggle with the technical aspects of class participation. Furthermore, discomfort and distractions can hinder an individual student’s ability to engage with the class from home, creating divergent learning experiences for different students. Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

Note that these two methods can be combined; these two example paragraphs could both be part of the same essay, but it’s wise to use an essay outline to plan out which approach you’re taking in each paragraph.

Some essay prompts include the keywords “compare” and/or “contrast.” In these cases, an essay structured around comparing and contrasting is the appropriate response.

Comparing and contrasting is also a useful approach in all kinds of academic writing : You might compare different studies in a literature review , weigh up different arguments in an argumentative essay , or consider different theoretical approaches in a theoretical framework .

Your subjects might be very different or quite similar, but it’s important that there be meaningful grounds for comparison . You can probably describe many differences between a cat and a bicycle, but there isn’t really any connection between them to justify the comparison.

You’ll have to write a thesis statement explaining the central point you want to make in your essay , so be sure to know in advance what connects your subjects and makes them worth comparing.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

Contrast Essay about Two Countries

Every country has its own characteristics and a person is recognized by his country. In this modern era, every country is trying to make progress and wants to be best among all other countries. All countries are different in world. There is no country that is exactly the same as others. Every country has its own culture, rules and regulations. Canada and Pakistan are two different countries and both countries have many differences regarding festivals, food and places. Festivals of Canada and Pakistan are mostly different from each other. Unlike Canada, there are mostly religious festivals in Pakistan.

In Canada, people celebrate the Valentine’s Day that represent the love and devotions for each other. In Pakistan, people used to celebrate the festival called Shabraat. It is an Islamic festival in which people pray to God whole night and they request to God to forgive us for the mistakes that they did in past. On the other hand people of Canada celebrate a festival named Hallowen. In this festival people share happiness in the form of candies and sweets and this festival is specially for children. In Pakistan people celebrate a festival Ramzan.

In this festival, people fasts during the day in the true sense of the word, that is, he had merely denies himself food and water and strict control over his tongue, eyes, ears, thoughts and deeds and does everything possible to seek the pleasure of God. Food is also a major difference in Pakistan and Canada. People of Canada eat almost everything but in Pakistan there is a concept of Halal and Haram. Everything on this earth is permissible, unless evidence is provided for its prohibition. The evidence could be direct text from the Quran, about specific creatures.

Prohibited animal would be identified by the characteristics of an animal features described in the prohibition. For example, all fanged animals are prohibited. In Canada, people drink alcoholic things and they are free to purchase these things from anywhere. In Pakistan, People are not allowed to drink alcoholic things and no one can sell these items as it is punishable by Islamic laws. For this reason, most observant Muslims avoid alcohol in any form, even small amounts that are sometimes used in cooking.

Canada and Pakistan have many sight seeing places hat attract the tourists but both countries have different places regarding to their characteristics. In Canada, there is Niagra Falls that attracts the people of whole world. It is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U. S. state of New York. Pakistan is a country in which you would find a variety of historical places that signify the unique traditions and culture of the country. These places are of extraordinary significance for people interested in history, at the same time they may act as an attraction for tourists.

Most significant historical places in the country include Harappa, Mohenjo- Daro and Taxila. Harappa is situated approximately 200 km from Lahore in the Montgomery District of Punjab. It is the place of the historic Indus Valley Civilization settlement which is as old as 5000 years and is a civilization which the modern day people almost forgot about. After go through to the major differences of both countries, it can be observed that Canada and Pakistan are totally different from each other and these differences make both countries great and unique.

Cultural Differences in the Two Countries

Cultural Differences in the Two Countries

Cultural variations are the various views, attitudes, cultures, actions, and expressions that are considered distinctive to the arms of the particular community, race or national origin. Cultural differences always make a clash between other individuals’ ideas, and it is very important to get to know about the fellow workers’ culture and their various attitudes and beliefs. Some examples of cultural differences, as they connect to the offices and universities, in universities some students are brighter than other students, also some students come from different countries or different parts of the country large cities or small cities which they hold different cultural values and different attitudes and also in workplaces there are younger and older people and also people who have qualifications than others which came from other countries. Employees and students are known to have more resemblances than dissimilarities, but sometimes those disagreements will overweigh the similarities. It is very important to understand other’s cultural backgrounds to build up a friendship and work with unity. (Guide and A-Z, 2020)

So in my essay which I have to compare and contrast cultural differences between two other countries I would like to contrast Sri Lankan culture with UK culture and how their culture impacts their education and their work. Both of these cultures are a bit similar because Sri Lanka was a colony that was under British for a long time. Therefore these two cultures show many similarities because Britain contributed so much for Sri Lankan education.

Sri Lankan schools are divided into two-sector, government schools, and private sector schools. State schools offer free education until the university level, since 1945 due to the act opposed by prevailed education minister C.W.W Kannangara, and the government provides free uniforms and textbooks for everyone. Sri Lankan education is compulsory for students from five to 16 years of age (The Educational System of Sri Lanka, 2020) Sri Lankan education is divided into five main parts such as primary, junior secondary, senior secondary, collegiate and tertiary. Sri Lankan education always tries to imitate its culture and wonders to students through various subjects such as history, Sinhala and Buddhism. Secondly, Sri Lanka holds three main assessments, such as scholarship exam at grade five, G.C.E. O/L at year eleven and G.C.E A/L at year thirteen. After completing G.C.E O/L’s students get a chance to choose their wishing career and select the subject out four main streams, mathematics, science, accounting and information and technology, and arts.

The UK is also one of those countries which provide free education for students. Generally, UK education is divided into four main parts primary education, secondary education, further education, and higher education, and students are assessed at the end of every key stage. UK education is compulsory for students until the age of sixteen. Generally, many people say that UK education is filled with fun and enjoyment. As journalists say that UK education is always trying to reduce the stress of students and get the maximum benefits of them with extra-curricular activities.

The UK is in the top 5 countries which provides the best education according to studentsvoice.com. Besides, the UK updates its syllabuses but in Sri Lanka, during the past recent years, there were many complaints about Sri Lankan education because of its outdated lessons. The lifestyle of a UK student makes a big difference with the lifestyle of a Sri Lankan student, in during primary education students doesn’t have the battle to pass exams and during secondary schools, students don’t stress so much but in Sri Lanka with the start of the secondary school teachers stress students with many home works due to the size of the syllabus, therefore students don’t get time to play and enjoy with others because since small days they try to fight to overcome other with good grades because every year exams are getting extremely harder and harder but those who get through these exams have good opportunities in the job market, but overall by considering various aspects such as child’s mentality, I feel that UK education culture is better than Sri Lankan because their syllabuses are created by considering thought and ability of a student.

Generally in Sri Lanka, a person can work up to nine hours with meal breaks and working hours should not exceed 48 hours a week this applies to males and females both, and companies can’t recruit employees who are under eighteen years legally. These rules and practices are practiced similarly in the UK. The age of retiring in Sri Lanka is sixty for men and for women it is fifty-five but in the private sector the retirement age of men is fifty-five and retirement of female working under Private Sector Company is fifty and for a government worker, they offer a pension after the retirement and for private-sector workers they offer an EPF. In the UK the retirement age is different in UK workers, they can work up to age sixty-five but to get a pension the employee should have to fulfill some qualifications

When contrasting both countries’ cultures I met some similarities and many differences, mainly in the field of education but it’s hard to mention what culture is the best because both of them have different tastes. But according to my perspectives, I would like to mention that the UK educational system is better than the Sri Lankan educational system, but Sri Lankan working Culture is better for me than the UK working system.

When an investor wants to make a foreign investment there are several factors which he must put into consideration before a deciding to invest in a particular country such factors will include, the cost of labor such that low cost of labor will attract an investor since it will mean better margins, availability of raw material is also another very important factor such that if the raw materials are available an investor will be motivated to invest in such location, other factors will include the business regulation framework which puts into consideration aspects such as taxation, the ease with which business licenses can be obtained and legal regulatory framework. Of particular interest in regards to this question is the comparison of Japan and China as an investment location based on the various variables which are important in foreign investment. Concerning government regulation in regards to establishment of new foreign business in china foreign investors are allowed to invested in local business but the ownership structure should be such that the locals do own part of the company through shares meaning that a foreign company cannot fully own the company the aim being to promote the local investors, there are several business incentives in china meant to encourage foreign investments, theseincludes; low profit enterprises are subjected to lower interest rates, the withholding taxes on foreign investment in regards to income earned had been reduced from 20% to 10% in order to attract foreign investment in addition an investment tax credit is allowed on capital expenditure such as plant and machinery(Zeng 36).China labor cost is extremely low and readily available leaving a big margins space for foreign investors to make profits, the population of China is 1.3billion hence a readily available target market for products and services in addition the purchasing power of the people has tremendously gone up meaning that target customers are readily available. Japan scenario is slightly different the real estate prices are extremely high, the labor cost is moderate in addition their legal framework allows the operations of foreign investments without delay meaning that a foreign company can easily start a business in Japan without Much formality and delays. The population of Japan is approximately 127 million which is far much less than that in china meaning a smaller market, technological standards are so high in Japan hence facilitating quick business transactions in the economy, they do also control 75% of the Asian market in addition they do have high saving rates meaning that the consumer purchasing power resulting in availability of the target market. Foreign incentives do also qualify for other tax incentives such as 30% depreciation rate, tax credit of 7% and 20% corporate tax (Zeng 19) The climatic conditions in Japan consist of rain and high humidity for China the climate is extremely diverse due to a wide coverage area, terrains and distance from the sea however most of china coverage is within the temperature belt meaning that its weather is hot tough there are some areas which are cold. Canada climatic conditions are generally cold and wet so for managers and chief executives who are relocating to either Japan or China then they have to adjust their dressing codes accordingly. The average monthly salary in china is approximately $700 dollars translating to $8,400 dollars per annum in Japan tough the average monthly wage is higher an average of $3000 dollars per month translating to $36,000 dollars per annum these means that the living conditions of employees in Japan is far way up compared to their counterparts in China this translates higher purchasing power by and improved standards of living for Japanese people compared to Chinese residents (Genzberger 11).There are a lot of political concerns in China, they still claim that island of Taiwan is part of their territory and they keep on trying to control them, the freedom of speech, freedom of religion and political rights have also been restricted in these country compared to Japan which has a stable political environment .Japan also has a very active relationship with United States Of America which facilitates trade. Social and cultural issues in China are varied and include unemployment which is steadily increasing, the increase in wealth gap, rising cost of education and increased medical cost this is what has caused unrest in some parts of China in Japan the issues are different and ranges from the complex immigration policies, complicated citizenship laws and too much tax burden.

Compare and Contrast Essay Between Two Cities: New York vs. Los Angeles

New York City (NY) and Los Angeles (LA) are two big cities found within the United States of America. Very large and populous, the cities are found in different states, New York City being in New York while Los Angeles in California. They both attract thousands of visitors in spite of being hugely crowded and costly to live in. While the cities have some similarities and may be attractive to various people depending on their lifestyles and preferences, New York City and Los Angeles are vastly different, especially in their climate, housing, population, and transportation.

New York City’s Climate significantly differs from that of Los Angeles. Halle & Beveridge (2013) note that in New York, the winter is glistening and frosty. As such, the atmosphere is classic in the Yuletide season thus making it possible to engage in such activities as snow man assembling and ice skating. In contrast, Los Angeles has winters that are extremely mild and summers that are leisurely and warm. In New York, the warmest temperatures are usually experienced in the southeastern lowlands. Noteworthy however, people who are conditioned to warm weather would still find the New York environment hospitable despite the snowfall. Los Angeles also has wet weather during winter. Another difference between the two cities, related to cost of living, is the housing markets. One would not have a problem finding a good job in either city. They would however have to put up with the expensive nature of the cities’ housing markets. While in Los Angeles people prefer living in a home, New York mostly has apartment dwellers. On average, one needs $3,900 for rent and $1.4 million to buy a house in New York. Things are entirely different in Los Angeles. In this Californian city, one needs $4,150 per month as the average rent. This is one of the few areas Los Angeles may be more expensive than New York. The average for buying a home is however much less than in New York as one would part with $785,000 (“Major Differences,” 2018). So, it is an outrageous affair to rent in either city. One may however consider owning a home in Los Angeles.

Further, NY and LA have populations that have significance differences. The most essential difference in this respect is that “New York is 233% more densely populated than Los Angeles” (Bestplaces.com, 2017). The implication is that NY’s population is well over double that of LA. This has been the trend over the past two decades. Specifically, New York City has a whopping population of 8,550,405 while that of Los Angles is 3,971,883. It obviously follows that NY has a higher population density than LA. Compared to LA’s 8,475, NY has a population density of 28,259. The median age in LA is 1.1 years younger than that in NY. The median age is also higher in NY (35.7) in comparison to LA’s 34.6. In both the cities, the female population is higher than the male population. While NY has a female population of 52.40% and male population of 47.60%, LA has a female population of 50.39% and male population of 49.61% (Bestplaces.net, 2017).

Another major difference between New York City and the city of Los Angeles is public transportation. In LA, there is a huge car culture where almost everybody drives. Most people have their own cars. Although there is public transportation in the city, few people use it. However, there is still traffic snarl up majorly because of the many personal cars. In New York on the other hand, almost everybody takes some form of public transportation. The most notable form of public transportation in the city is the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) or the “subway” through which one can access most places within the city (Fung Bros, 2016). This means that transportation in NY is cheaper than that in LA. This is because unlike in LA where personal cars are the order of the day, one would not need regular fueling and parking fee in NY.

New York City and Los Angeles have many differences in spite of having some similarities as large cities within the US. The cities are attractive to people from all over the world owing to their different features and characteristics. However, the climate, housing characteristics, population and public transportation spell how vastly different the cities are. In terms of transportation, NY is cheaper due to the presence of the MTA. Additionally, the cities may both be densely populated but as has been seen, NY is far much more densely populated than LA. They also have distinct housing characteristics that may inform one’s decision to live in either city or acquire or buy a home in either of them.

Compare And Contrast Essay Between Two Countries

The two countries that I’m going to compare and contrast their Demographic Transitions with each other are England and Wales, being the MECD, and Sri Lanka, being the LECD.

Differences

The main difference between the two demographic transitions is that the demographic transition for Sri Lanka is entirely a twentieth century occurrence. The data starts at 1911 – 1920 where the demographic transition for England and Wales starts at 1651 – 1680. This is a lot earlier.

The CDR in England and Wales started to fall a long time before the CDR started to fall in Sri Lanka, it was about 1810 when England and Wales’ crude death rates started to fall and although you cant be sure exactly when Sri Lanka’s started to fall it was nearly 100 yrs after.

Difference Between Ledc And Medc

There is also a difference with when the CBR started to decline. With England and Wales it started in about 1891, whereas in Sri Lanka it didn’t start to drop until the 1950’s.

One more difference is that at the present time, England and Wales are in stage 4 of the Demographic Transition, where Sri Lanka is still in stage 3. I think that the further along in the demographic transition a country is, is a sign to show how developed that certain country is.

Another difference is that the time that it has taken for both these countries to go through stage 2 and 3 of the demographic transition is different. England and Wales started stage 2 in 1770 and finished stage 3 in about 1950, just under 200 years, whereas Sri Lanka only took about 100 years.

comparison essay between two countries

Proficient in: Contrast

“ Really polite, and a great writer! Task done as described and better, responded to all my questions promptly too! ”

Similarities

The first similarities that I spotted are that even though they are both in different stages, the stages are very similar. This is shown in stage 2 of both countries where the CBR stays high and the CDR is falling. This is also true of stage 3 in each where the CBR is falling and the CDR is levelling off.

Due to the decline in death rate and the birth rate staying as it is, then both countries will find an increase in population. Although this happens at different times.

Reasons for Differences and similarities

The reason that England and Wales’ CDR fell a lot earlier than Sri Lanka is because a number of reasons, theses are:

Improved sanitation and hygiene brought into all urban areas by the government. This included thing such as covered sewers, water closets and means of sanitary water supply. Public health acts in 1872 and 1875 also helped, inspectors were also brought in for hygiene.

Improved food supply brought about by major innovations such as crop rotation, land draining and new farm machinery. With the improvements of communications it also became easier to transport the food to areas of shortage.

Reduced impact of infectious disease also helped to lower the CDR.

There were many medical advances that made a difference practically in the late 19th century after the national heath service was started in 1946.

Whereas in Sri Lanka the CDR fell because of some different reasons, these are:

There was control of Malaria brought in which contributed 25-40% of all mortality declines. This wasn’t started until 1947 when a DDT scheme got under way.

There was better health care brought in, between 1938-48 the number of hospitals doubled from 115 to 246. There was an increase in foreign aid, which also boosted the health care in the country.

Growth in the economy took place between1947-52 due to a rise in price for plantation products, which resulted in a higher budget for health care.

Once that malaria had been brought under control, zones that once couldn’t be farmed due to the malaria before could now be used and this provided more nutrition, thus decreasing CDR in the country.

The reason why England and Wales’ CBR fell before Sri Lanka’s can once again be split up into smaller reasons, theses are:

In 1842 all women and children were excluded from the mines and by 1906 no children under the age of 11 were working. This combined with the compulsory education act of 1867 meant that children were no longer seen as an economic asset.

Economic changes such as more women entering work and thus not having children.

The growth of ideas such as the publishing of leaflets about contraception also contributed to the decline in CBR. Also the availability of the contraception made a difference.

The decline in mortality had an effect also. As more children survived, women needed to have fewer births to achieve the same family size.

This is just some of the main similarities and differences between a MEDC and a LEDC, there are many more smaller ones as well as what I’ve already put.

During the years 1200 to 1500 CE, two ideal empires, Mali of Sub – Saharan Africa and the Aztecs of the Americas developed into truly influential and powerful empires. Both empires shared a similarity in economy but a different society. The Mali and Aztecs both traded, but while Mali traded with Islamic regions developing Islamic institutions within its borders, the Aztecs traded locally consequently not being influenced by outside cultures. comparison essay between two countries

Compare and contrast essays are academic papers in which a student analyses two or more subjects with each other. To compare means to explore similarities between subjects, while to contrast means to look at their differences. Both subjects of the comparison are usually in the same category, although they have their differences. For example, it can be two movies, two universities, two cars etc.

Good compare and contrast papers focus on a central point, explaining the importance and implications of this analysis. A compare and contrast essay thesis must make a meaningful comparison. Find the central theme of your essay and do some brainstorming for your thesis.

This type of essay is very common among college and university students. Professors challenge their students to use their analytical and comparative skills and pay close attention to the subjects of their comparisons. This type of essay exercises observance and analysis, helps to establish a frame of reference, and makes meaningful arguments about a subject. Let's get deeper with our research writing services .

How to Start a Compare and Contrast Essay: Brainstorm Similarities and Differences

When you are set with your topic, the first thing you should do is grab a piece of paper and make a list with two columns: similarities and differences. Jot down key things first, the most striking ones. Then try to look at the subjects from a different angle, incorporate your imagination.

If you are more of a visual learner, creating a Venn diagram might be a good idea. In order to create it, draw two circles that overlap. In the section where it overlaps, note similarities. Differences should be written in the part of circle that does not overlap.

Let’s look at a simple example. Let one of the subjects be oranges, and the other one be apples. Oranges have thick peel, originally from India, and are tropical fruit. These characteristics pertain only to oranges and should be in the part of the circle that does not overlap. For the same section on apples, we put thin peel, originated in Turkey or Kazakhstan, and moderate to subtropical. In the section that overlaps, let’s put that they are both fruit, can be juiced, and grow on trees. This simple, yet good example illustrates how the same concept can be applied to many other complicated topics with additional points of comparison and contrast.

compare essay

This format of visual aid helps to organize similarities and differences and make them easier to perceive. Your diagram will give you a clear idea of the things you can write about.

Another good idea for brainstorming in preparation for your comparison contrast essay is to create a list with 2 columns, one for each subject, and compare the same characteristics for each of them simultaneously. This format will make writing your comparison contrast paper argument a breeze, as you will have your ideas ready and organized.

One mistake you should avoid is simply listing all of the differences or similarities for each subject. Sometimes students get too caught up in looking for similarities and differences that their compare and contrast essays end up sounding like grocery lists. Your essay should be based on analyzing the similarities and differences, analyzing your conclusions about the two subjects, and finding connections between them—while following a specific format.

Compare and Contrast Essay Structure and Outline

Compare and contrast papers rely heavily on factual analysis. Two outline methods can help you organize your facts: use the block method, or point-by-point method, to write a compare and contrast essay outline.

While using the block structure , all the information is presented for the first subject, and its characteristics and specific details are explained. This concludes one block. The second block takes the same approach as the first for the second subject.

The point-by-point structure lists each similarity and difference simultaneously—making notes of both subjects. For example, you can list a characteristic specific to one subject, followed by its similarity or difference to the other subject.

Both formats have their pros and cons. The block method is clearly easier to write, as you simply point out all of the information about the two subjects, and basically leave it to the reader to do the comparison. The point-by-point format requires you to analyze the points yourself while making similarities and differences more explicit to the reader for them to be easier to understand. Here is a detailed structure of each type presented below.

Point-by-Point Method

Example thesis: Cars and motorcycles make for excellent means of transportation, but a good choice depends on the person’s lifestyle, finances, and the city they live in.

Body Paragraph 1 - LIFESTYLE

Body Paragraph 2 - FINANCES

Body Paragraph 3 - CITY

Block Method

Body Paragraph 1

Body Paragraph 2

Body Paragraph 3 ‍

Use the last paragraph to evaluate the comparisons and explain why they’re essential. Giving a lot of facts can be intense. To water it down, try to give the reader any real-life applications of these facts.

Depending on the structure selected, you can begin to create an outline for your essay. The typical structure for any essay follows the format of having an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion — though, if you need to focus on each subject in more detailed ways, feel free to include an extra paragraph to cover all of the most important points.

To make your compare and contrast essay flow better, we recommend using special transition words and phrases. They will add variety and improve your paper overall.

For the section where you compare two subjects, you can include any of the following words: similarly, likewise, also, both, just like, similar to, the same as, alike, or to compare to. When contrasting two subjects, use: in contrast, in comparison, by comparison, on the other hand, while, whereas, but, to differ from, dissimilar to, or unlike.

Show Your Evidence

Arguments for any essay, including compare and contrast essays, need to be supported by sufficient evidence. Make good use of your personal experiences, books, scholarly articles, magazine and newspaper articles, movies, or anything that will make your argument sound credible. For example, in your essay, if you were to compare attending college on campus vs. distance-based learning, you could include your personal experiences of being a student, and how often students show up to class on a daily basis. You could also talk about your experience taking online classes, which makes your argument about online classes credible as well.

Different countries across the world have diverse cultural practices, and this has an effect on work relationships and development. Geert Hofstede came up with a structured way of comparing cultural dimensions of different countries. The theory explains the impacts of a community’s culture on the values of the community members, and the way these values relate to their behaviors. He gives scores as a way to help distinguish people from different nations using the following dimensions: long-term orientation, individualism, power distance, indulgence, necessity avoidance, and masculinity. Let us examine comparisons between two countries: the United Kingdom and China — based on Hofstede’s Six Dimensions of Culture.
Over the last two decades, the demand from consumers for organic foods has increased tremendously. In fact, the popularity of organic foods has exploded significantly with consumers, spending a considerably higher amount of money on them as compared to the amount spent on inorganic foods. The US market noted an increase in sales of more than 10% between 2014 and 2015 (Brown, n.p). The increase is in line with the views of many consumers that organic foods are safer, tastier, and healthier compared to the inorganic foods. Furthermore, considering the environmental effects of foods, organic foods present less risk of environmental pollution — compared to inorganic foods. By definition, organic foods are those that are grown without any artificial chemical treatment, or treatment by use of other substances that have been modified genetically, such as hormones and/or antibiotics (Brown, n.p).

The same goes for too many similarities, which will result in poor contrasts. For example, it is better to write about two composers, rather than a composer and a singer.

Comparison Essay Sample on Two Educational Systems

Comparison Essay Sample on Two Educational Systems

Education is handled with different styles in different countries; each country accounts for its top performers at the end of every academic year. There is a need to assess the differences between different education systems; this helps one to know which education policies are the best. Making a comparison between the education system among the two countries helps to indicate which system is most favorable and efficient in the process of imparting knowledge to students. Taking, for instance, the United States education system in comparison with Canada’s education system, using the PISA’s International Outcomes of Learning Mathematics Literacy and Problem solving as a comparison tool. This tool offers a comparison of the highest grades between the two countries (Bayrakdar, Deniz, Akgün, & Isleyen, 2011). Below is an outlook of the differences in education performance between the United States and Canada and the factors that contribute in making one education system superior to the other.

Performance in Learning mathematics literacy and problems solving of 15-year-olds in the United States recorded an average of 498 points as compared to the 496 points recorded by OECD countries. The girls performed better than boys by an average of 31 points. In science literacy, an American 15 Year old scored 497 points as compared to the 501 points in OECD counties with girls performing better than boys by 2 points. On the other hand, Canada is performing better than the United States, an average 15 year old Canadian student scored 523 points as compared to the 496 points in OECD countries (Ada, 2016). In science literacy, 15-year-old Canadian’s scored a 525 compared to the 501 average in OECD countries. Based on the above statistics, it is seen that Canada is performing better than the United States in both mathematics and science literacy, it should be noted that Canada has a very small portion of low performing students as compared to the United States. Another reason is that students in Canada have equal access to healthcare and social services as the gaps between the rich, and the poor is insignificant. The consistency in teaching methods across Canada and the curriculum makes the performance through the country at the same level. Comparing the above factors with the United States accounts for the disparity in performance between these two countries (Bayrakdar, Deniz, Akgün, & Isleyen, 2011).

The United States records the highest percentage of students who attended pre-primary education for more than one year with a 64% attendance mark making it number 1 out of 39 countries compared. Canada on the other end had a 40% attendance on pre-primary education for one year or less rating them at number 8 out of 64 countries compared (Ada, 2016). This is an indicator that the United States give more attention to early childhood education as compared to Canada. Canada has the highest turn around figures of post-secondary students due to their high performance in school as compared to the US which on average has a bigger percentage of low performing students. The United Sates government has a cumulative expenditure in the education of $115961 on the education of every 6 to 15-year-olds; this ranks them at 5/39. The Canadian government expenditure is not provided. Considerably the US government spends a lump sum of cash in education (Ada, 2016).

I would prefer to teach in the Canadian education system due to the great job security and the unionization of teachers; there is more chaos in the US teaching industry. On the other hand, the United Sates has better paid teachers, averaging $55,693 annually, while teachers in Canada earn approximately C$50890 annually ("Comparing Canada and the U.S. on Education", 2016). The PISA report is highly useful in the analysis of student performance among students in different countries. The PISA system analyses, student performance in sciences and mathematics, comparisons of performance and socio-economic status, performance and diversity, and finally the government expenditure on education. The system takes in different external factors that generally affect all students and performance hence making the PISA tool a perfect tool for analyzing student performance.

How to Start a Compare and Contrast Essay?

Writing a perfect compare and contrast essay depends on how strong the planning and execution are. When you are assigned a compare and contrast essay, it is not preferred to start writing it right away.

Focus on the prewriting steps that include planning and outlining the information to make the essay readable. Below are the pre-writing steps that should be taken to start your compare and contrast essay:

How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay?

According to the basic  compare and contrast essay outline , it is started with an introductory paragraph, followed by body graphs, and a concluding section at the end of the essay.

1. Introduction

An engaging introduction helps attract the audience's attention and motivates them to read the entire essay. A catchy introduction has the following elements:

For example, an introduction to elementary school vs. middle school can be:

“What is it like to transition from elementary to middle school? That is a question many kids ask each year. Having experienced both, I can tell you that there are plenty of similarities as well as some very big differences between the two types of schools.”

Compare and Contrast Essay Introduction Example (PDF)

2. Body Paragraphs

The body section of an essay includes every critical information to be shared with the audience. All the points in this section are presented to prove the thesis statement and provide details about the subject.

The body paragraphs of a compare and contrast essay are structured according to two methods:

The subject-by-subject or block method is the most commonly used structure for a comparison essay.

This subject structure focuses on;

Subject By Subject Method Example

Another typical structure followed for writing the compare and contrast essays is the point by point structure. It is easier and more popular.

The point structure focuses on;

No matter which method you choose, keep in mind that the whole essay should be aligned according to the selected method.

For example:

“Elementary schools and middle schools have many traits in common. Typically, both are open five days a week for a set number of hours each day. Students sit at desks in classrooms and are expected to listen to and learn from their teachers. There is a set time for lunch.

Each day, students are given homework assignments. Students take quizzes and tests. In all of these ways, middle school should feel somewhat familiar to new students.

However, there are some big changes that new middle school students should be aware of. In elementary school, students usually stay in the same classroom with one teacher for most of the day. That is not the case in middle school, where students typically have a different teacher for each subject.

Students must move to a different classroom for each subject too. Since there is not one classroom in which to store supplies, middle schools often provide students with lockers. For many kids, getting a locker is a welcome rite of passage.”

3. Conclusion

In this section, a writer summarizes all the essay's major points. It also presents the final verdict to prove the thesis statement.

“Making the move from elementary school to middle school may seem scary, but knowing what to expect can really help. Elementary school provides kids with the experiences they need to be ready for middle school. Even though moving on means adjusting to a new environment, some things, including many of the classmates who accompany you, will remain the same.”

4. Proofreading

After completing the essay, revision is done to fix all mistakes and errors in the content. Proofreading is an important step to making your paper flawless and effective.

Before submitting your essay, check for mistakes in punctuation, grammar, format, tone, vocabulary, syntax, etc.

Make the required editings in this step and submit a well-written assignment.
