10 Unexpected First Date Ideas

Are you going for a first date and you intend to make it spectacular? You don’t have to do what everyone does on their first date. If you want to set yourself apart from the crowd, try these unexpected first date ideas. They will electrify your date and help you to make an unforgettable first impression. And who knows, maybe you will still talk about it many years from now.
Visit a Museum
Extraordinary, right? There’s a common misconception that museums are full of old boring art. However, these days there are a lot of contemporary museums that showcase intriguing modern and contemporary pieces. Art is always a good conversation starter, and you can get to know more about your date’s perspective through art.
Do you know of any organizations in your area that could do with a helping hand? An example of volunteering would be feeding the homeless or visiting a senior center. Here you can get to see your date’s human side by seeing how they relate with the less fortunate. Afterward you can spend some quality time with your partner over a meal or a cup of coffee.

Tour Your City
Visiting tourist sites around your city is a great way to spend your first date. Every town has a lot of hidden gems which you can explore with your date and spend quality time together.

Watching a Live Game
This sounds rather boring, but it can be exciting on your first date. Sport matches have a very dynamic atmosphere and are exciting. Also, if you’re lost for words you can always talk about the match. A few games to watch are basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis, rugby or golf.

Visit an Arboretum or Botanical Garden
There’s nothing as romantic as watching different species of birds and plants on your first date. Being in nature is also very peaceful and will give you a lot of quality time. Combine the trip with a picnic to impress your date even more. To sit on a picnic blanket amongst flowers and birds with nice snacks is a very relaxed yet romantic way to get to know each other.

House Hunting
Is either of you looking for a place to live? Why not ask your date to come along? House hunting can quickly help you find out plenty of things about your partner. Ask them a few questions during the hunt, and you’ll discover whether they’re spendthrifts, good planners or have a good eye for detail as well as their tastes and preferences.

Visit a Psychic
A psychic can tell you right away if you’re compatible or not. Of course, visiting a psychic depends on your beliefs, but you might find it interesting whether you believe in fortune-telling or not. There are a lot of fake psychics these days, so be sure to do in-depth research on your psychic before the visit.

Attend a Cooking Class
You are going to get hungry at some point, right? Try attending a cooking class where you can both learn how to make delicious meals that you can eat afterward.

Watch Movies at Home
Watching movies at home will give you and your date intimate time to bond. Instead of visiting a movie theater where you have to watch whatever’s showing, you can pick any movie that you like at home. You can also save money if you happen to be broke. After all, broke people need to date too.
Visit a Flea Market

Flea markets have many activities that you can do together with your date. From eating to buying trinkets and gifts or listening to different bands play their music, there’s no shortage of activities. Flea markets also take the pressure off the date, as you’re not focused on each other all the time but can pay some attention to bargaining and browsing for rare finds.

Thesis & Dissertation Submission Deadlines
Thesis and dissertation related documents are reviewed year-round in the order received. The review process typically takes between 6 and 8 weeks. Students should expect at least one, and possibly two rounds of manuscript formatting corrections.
Students who are enrolled in 794/594
Students who are enrolled in 594, 794, or a similar course during the semester they wish to graduate may defend and upload the checklist and the first draft of the manuscript at any time. To ensure ample time for formatting revisions, we recommend that students wishing to graduate in the fall submit the checklist in October. Students who wish to graduate in the spring should submit the checklist in March and students who wish to graduate in the summer should submit the checklist in June. Please see the images below for a more detailed timeline.

Students who are not enrolled in 794/594
Students who are not enrolled in 594, 794, or a similar course and wish to waive the continuous enrollment requirement must upload the checklist and the first draft of the manuscript by the deadlines below. These deadlines are established in relation to USC’s add/drop dates. If a student does not meet the deadlines, they will need to immediately enroll in 594, 794, or a similar course.
Enrollment is not required during the summer semester therefore the continuous enrollment waiver is only available in the fall and spring semesters. International students wishing to waive the continuous enrollment requirement should check with the Office of International Services (OIS) to be sure the lack of course registration will not affect their visa status.

Spring deadlines for students not enrolled in 594, 794 or similar course.

*Draft reviews are optional. The draft review service is available during the first few weeks of each quarter, not later and not during the interim. If you plan to submit your dissertation at the beginning of a quarter, you may want to request a draft review during the previous quarter, even if your draft is incomplete.
** Please note that departments have additional deadlines. Contact your department to be sure you meet departmental requirements. Contact your dean of students with questions about registration or divisional requirements for graduation . The dissertation defense and any changes recommended by the dissertation committee must occur before you ask for departmental approval. You must upload the completed and signed Departmental Approval Form before you file your dissertation , and you must file before the 4:30 p.m. submission deadline in order to graduate that quarter.

Dissertation Dates and Deadlines
During the 2022-23 academic year, degrees will be conferred on the following dates:
- October 19, 2022
- February 8, 2023
- May 17, 2023
In order to have the degree conferred on the dates above, all required materials must be submitted by the deadlines stated below.
2022-23 MPhil Deadlines
Candidates who have completed all requirements for the PhD except the dissertation apply through their department or program in order to receive the Master of Philosophy degree. Applications for the MPhil can be filed at any point in the calendar year. Degrees are conferred three times during the academic year—in October, February, and May.
MPhil Application
The MPhil application must be submitted by the department or program to the Dissertation Office by the appropriate deadline. Applications received after the submission deadline will be moved to the following conferral period for processing.
Application for the Dissertation Defense
The Application for the Dissertation Defense form should be submitted to GSAS by the department or program office when the five proposed examiners, defense date and location have been finalized. This form must be reviewed and approved by GSAS before the defense may take place. The department or program office should send us the completed form ideally four—but no fewer than two—weeks before a defense takes place. Any forms received within two weeks of a defense will be rejected, and the defense will have to be rescheduled.
2022-23 Distribution Deadlines
- Students who miss the Spring 2023 distribution deadline are not required to register for the summer; they can distribute any time until September 1, 2023 to be considered a summer distribution. Beyond the September 1st distribution deadline, students must register for the fall.
Dissertation Deposit Deadlines
It is the doctoral candidate's responsibility to ensure that the dissertation is correctly formatted before the deposit deadline. For your convenience and use while you write your dissertation—or toward the end, when you are preparing it for deposit— we suggest using this Word template or this LaTeX template , which incorporate and comply with all GSAS formatting requirements , and can be used to eliminate common formatting errors that may delay your dissertation deposit.
Students with any questions about formatting, or who would like to have their formatting reviewed, should contact [email protected] well in advance of the deposit deadline.
Please note that it will take three business days for a certification letter to be produced for deposits that take place in the week before a deadline. If you need your certification letter by a certain date, it is your responsibility to complete the process in advance. PhD students do not need to apply for graduation through the Office of the University Registrar.

Thesis and Dissertation: Final-Term Procedures and Steps
Degree application.
A Degree Application MUST be submitted BEFORE you can submit a document for review by the Graduate School Editorial Office and prior to the degree application during your intended term of degree award. Degree applications are filed through ONE.UF. Please be aware that during the summer semester, the University's degree application deadline falls after the doctoral first submission deadline. All students, however, must have a degree application on file in order to successfully make the first submission to our office. In turn, all doctoral students must submit their degree applications no later than the first submission deadline during the summer semester.
Please also note: At the beginning of the term, a “Degree Application not found” error may occur even with a valid degree application on file. This may occur until the Graduate Records Office has completed degree certification for the previous semester’s graduating class. Should you receive this error message and have submitted your degree application more than 1 business day ago, please forward a copy of your current degree application, along with your PDF thesis or dissertation document, to the Graduate School Editorial Office via an email to [email protected], and we will be happy to set up a record for you.
Doctoral Dissertation First Submission
This is the last day to sign into GIMS in order to upload your fully formatted doctoral dissertation in PDF format for review by one of our editors. The dissertation must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on this deadline in order to move forward toward a degree award this term. All submissions are made via the Graduate Information Management System (GIMS) . Once logged into GIMS, you will see a link to create your editorial package.
Please note: Doctoral students must orally defend their dissertation by the Final Submission deadline but are not required to defend prior to submitting their dissertation for the First Submission review by the Editorial Office. Although not required to defend prior to making the first submission, a transmittal letter must be posted to GIMS by the academic unit prior to any doctoral student attempting to submit their dissertation for first submission review by the Editorial Office.
Master's Thesis First Submission (and Oral Defense Deadline for Master's Thesis Students)
You should submit your master's thesis to our office for review as soon as you successfully pass your oral defense. Once you successfully orally defend, your department should submit your final exam form into SIS. The submission deadline is the last day to sign into GIMS in order to upload your fully formatted master's thesis in PDF format for review by one of our editors--do not wait until this day to submit a document for review. The thesis must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on this deadline in order to move forward toward a degree award this term. All submissions are made via the Graduate Information Management System (GIMS) . Once logged into GIMS, you will see a link to create your editorial package.
Please note: Students obtaining a master's degree must orally defend prior to making their first submission to the Editorial Office. Accordingly, for master’s students, the final exam data must be posted to SIS by the student's academic unit prior to the student submitting the thesis for First Submission review by the Editorial Office. It is recommended that as soon as the oral defense has successfully occurred, the final exam date should be posted by the department, and the student should promptly submit the thesis to the Editorial Office for review. If additional revisions, to the thesis document, are necessitated, the Committee Chair's designee should hold the ETD Signature Page from posting into GIMS until all changes to the thesis document have been made to the satisfaction of the committee. The ETD Signature Page must be posted to the student’s GIMS record by the Final Submission deadline, within the intended term of degree award.
Final Submission
As soon as the ETD Signature Page has been signed by the full committee and posted to GIMS, one should submit their final document for review by our office. Do not wait until the final submission deadline to do so. The final submission deadline is the last day to make your first attempt at final acceptance by the Graduate School's Editorial Office.
This date only applies to thesis and dissertation students who have successfully met the First Submission deadline previously. This is the last potential day to submit the final document for review by the Editorial Office via the Graduate Information Management System (GIMS) . The final thesis/dissertation must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on this deadline in order to move forward toward a degree award this term.
Please note: Doctoral students intent on a degree award during the current term must orally defend and must have all of their final exam forms posted by this deadline in order to move forward with their final submission to the Editorial Office. All other students intent on a degree award in the current term (including master's thesis students, who must orally defend by the first submission deadline) must have all forms posted by this deadline. After the defense, if additional revisions to the thesis or dissertation are necessitated, the Committee Chair's designee can hold the ETD Signature Page from posting to GIMS until all changes to the document have been made to the satisfaction of the committee. However, this form must be posted to the student’s GIMS record by the Final Submission deadline, within the intended term of degree award. Students cannot make a final submission or achieve Final Clearance status with the Editorial Office without the ETD form in place. Students cannot submit the PDF document for final review by the Editorial Office until it has been cleared by their committee for publication, and the ETD Signature Page has been submitted, as once accepted by the Editorial Office, no further changes can be permitted to the final document.
Students unable to meet the final submission deadline requirements who did successfully complete the first submission milestone may be eligible to clear prior to the upcoming term. See below for more information about clearing prior.
Since there are hundreds of students with these same deadlines, to ensure you meet your intended goal, our office recommends submitting at least 5 business days in advance of all submission deadlines.
Final Clearance (Approval)
This is the last day to achieve final approval and acceptance by the Graduate School's Editorial Office.
Please note: This deadline only applies to students who have successfully met both First and Final Submission Deadlines.
The final thesis/dissertation must be accepted by 5:00 p.m. on this deadline in order for a degree award this term. P erspicacious students complete all requirements well in advance of this deadline, to ensure they do not face the chance of not graduating during their intended term of degree award. As there are hundreds of students with this same final clearance deadline, which degree certification directly follows, this deadline is firm.
Students unable to meet the final clearance deadline who did successfully complete the first submission milestone may be eligible to clear prior to the upcoming term. See below for more information about clearing prior.
Clear Prior Final Approval Deadline (for an intended degree award in the upcoming semester)
This is the last day to achieve final approval and acceptance by the Graduate School's Editorial Office with the intent of a degree award during the upcoming semester, with a waiver of the final-term registration requirements and fees for that upcoming semester.
Please note: This deadline only applies to students who have successfully met the First Submission Deadline . The student may have missed the Final Submission and/or the Final Clearance Deadline, however, during their original intended term of degree award. Clearing prior is a possibility only for thesis and dissertation students who have met all published deadlines for the current term except Final Submission and/or Final Clearance from the Graduate School Editorial Office. No other students are eligible.
Clearing Prior permits students to be exempt from registration in their final term (the term in which the degree will be awarded). Among other requirements, including the successful oral defense, the final thesis/dissertation must be accepted (not just submitted) by 5:00 p.m. on this deadline. For this reason, we recommend submitting the document at least 5 business days in advance of this clearance deadline.
A student requesting to clear prior must meet ALL of the following criteria:
- The student has successfully submitted a degree application for the current term within the published deadlines, as confirmed from ONE.UF .
- The student has appropriately satisfied the current-term registration.
- The student has successfully met the current-term first submission deadline for the thesis or dissertation, as confirmed by the Editorial Office, via a confirmation email to the student and committee chair.
- The student has successfully met all other degree and administrative requirements, within the published deadlines for the current term, except Final Submission and/or Final Clearance with the Graduate School Editorial Office.
- The student is in the process of finalizing the thesis or dissertation with the Graduate School Editorial Office. No other students are eligible.

- By December 17, 2022 or April 30, 2023, your Master's Application for Advanced Degree E-Doc must be received by the University Graduate School. Defense deadlines.
At least 30 days before your defense, schedule a mutually agreeable time with your committee to hold your defense, and submit your defense announcement.

ETD Submission Deadlines By Semester
1 Deadline to Defend : All defenses for students expecting graduation in a particular semester must take place by the date noted in the above table. All students must notify the Graduate School of the defense date by filling out the Defense Notice Form and submitting it to the Graduate School before the day of defense. Defenses can be in-person only, virtual only, or hybrid (in-person and virtual). The Defense Notice Form should clearly specify whether the defense will be in-person, virtual, or hybrid (in-person and virtual). Students defending after the above noted last date to defend are not eligible to graduate in that semester. Exceptions for a late defense will be considered by the Graduate School only by formal appeal and only if the formal request is made before the deadline to defend date. Formal requests should include reasons for the late defense date and the specific date the later defense will be held. Formal requests should be sent to [email protected] and the student's main advisor and Graduate Program Director must be cc'd on the message. NOTE : Even if a late defense date request is approved by the Graduate School for a given semester, the graduation date will move to the next semester if any of the remaining ETD deadlines for that semester, i.e., deadline to submit the full draft for formatting review; deadline to produce the final PDF; and deadline for ETD completion are missed.
2 Deadline to Submit Full Draft for Formatting Review : By the date noted in the above table, the student must submit to the Sr. Editor of the Graduate School for review the full draft of a thesis, dissertation, doctoral essay, or lecture recital essay draft consisting of (1) unnumbered front matter; (2) lower-case Roman numeral page number front matter; and (3) chapters, references, appendices, etc., formatted per Graduate School formatting guidelines. The main content of the full draft due on this day should be close to final. Students may continue to make minor revisions to the draft after this date, but no new data or sections should be added at this stage. The graduation date for students who do not submit a full draft to the Graduate School for review by the date noted above will move to the next semester.
3 Deadline for Producing Final PDF & 3 Required ETD Forms : The formatting review must be completed; final PDF produced; and the three required ETD forms, i.e., the Certificate of Defense Approval Form , the ETD Final Content Approval Form and the ETD Availability Agreement Form, must be submitted to the Graduate School by the date noted in the above table. The Graduate School must receive all three required forms fully signed for the student to receive permission from the Sr. Editor to upload the final ETD in the [email protected] ETD repository. The graduation date moves to the next semester for students who do not complete the formatting review with the Sr. Editor; produce the final PDF; and submit the Certificate of Defense Approval Form, ETD Final Content Approval Form, and the ETD Availability Agreement Form to the Graduate School by the date noted above--no exceptions.
4 Deadline for Completion : By the date noted in the above table, students expecting graduation in a particular semester must have uploaded the final PDF in the [email protected] ETD repository; confirmed that the required Certificate of Defense Approval Form , ETD Final Content Approval Form , and ETD Availability Agreement Form are submitted to the Graduate School; and completed online items, if required. The graduation date moves to the next semester for students who have not uploaded the final PDF in the [email protected] ETD repository; confirmed submission of the three required ETD forms to the Graduate School; or completed online items, if required, by the date noted in the above table--no exceptions.
The above deadlines are set to help students with planning ahead, however, students can begin the final formatting review process with the Sr. Editor any time before the posted deadline dates. Inquiries should be sent to [email protected] .
