How to Survive Your PhD

phd statistics ucl

About this course

You need to be smart to begin a PhD - but you need to be resilient to finish one. Between one-quarter and one-third of all research students never finish their degree. The PhD is an emotional journey as much as it is an intellectual one.

What kinds of emotions does the research degree process provoke? What strategies can help students deal with the emotional highs and lows? How can academic advisors, family and friends help research students cope with these stresses - and celebrate the successes?

This course is primarily designed for masters, PhD, and research students and the academics who are tasked with helping them, but you may also be a family member or friend of a PhD student who is seeking to better understand what your loved one is going through.

By directly addressing the emotional issues, and by helping us see the connections between emotional resilience and success, this course aims to help us all create a more supportive academic environment, where students can do their best research work.

At a glance

What you'll learn

Week one: Setting the scene Prior research on research student success and failure shows that there are a range of common factors at play. We examine these factors and start to look at the causes.   Week Two: A quick history of the doctorate To better understand how and research degree study can be so difficult we will take a brief tour back to the late middle ages and the birth of the university - as a place and an idea.   Week Three: Confidence We take a look at confidence, in particular why some students have very little. We’ll explore the imposter syndrome and how we might counter it and then have a look at the risks of over confidence.   Week Four: Frustration This week we look at frustration. Research can be very frustrating, but writing is perhaps the site of most of the frustration that students feel. We explore the nature of this frustration and how supervisors can make it better - or worse.   Week Five: Loneliness Loneliness and isolation seems to be a common problem for research students - but how does it happen? We look at the difference between social isolation and intellectual isolation. We tackle the difficult problem of how much help a supervisor should really give a student.   Week Six: Fear Research students are high achievers who often have an intense fear of failure. We look at two fears in particular - fear of writing and fear of speaking in public.   Week Seven: Curiosity Good researchers are curious creatures! Curiosity is crucial to research, but what happens when curiosity gets out of control? This week we focus on the literature review as a site where curiosity can get out of control.   Week Eight: Confusion Confusion is an inevitable part of the research degree process - but do research students get confused about the same sorts of  things?   Week Nine: Boredom A research degree usually involves a big project that takes place over an extended period of time. It’s inevitable that some students will get bored. But boredom is much more interesting than you might think!   Week Ten: Love Do researchers always love their work? What about love for your supervisor - is that appropriate? If you truly love your discipline, how should you behave as a researcher? This week we look at Love - and it’s complicated.

About this degree

The demand for numerate graduates exceeds the supply in most areas. Many new and existing opportunities in industry, medicine, government, commerce, or research await science graduates who have supplemented their first degree with additional training in quantitative skills, such as those provided by the postgraduate programmes available within the Department of Statistical Science.

Who this course is for

This programme is best suited to those aiming for a research degree and/or an academic career in Statistics, Data Science and other related fields.

What this course will give you

While the department offers world-class expertise along with strong links to practitioners, its position within UCL provides breadth. Besides ties to other mathematical sciences, the department collaborates with researchers in engineering, management, and medicine. The opportunity to engage with leading researchers across disciplines while accessing London-based government and industry figures gives UCL students a distinct advantage.

More intangibly, by being in a truly multidisciplinary environment, UCL students gain an appreciation for knowledge and its societal impact. This leads not only to new insights but also to a readiness to critique the established order, which is both intellectually and personally fulfilling.

The foundation of your career

Employability.

Graduates of the PhD programme are well placed to continue as researchers in both academia and the private sector. In particular, greater data collection has created a demand for enhanced methodologies for analysis, which is a strength of most recent graduates.

The department has strong connections with a number of inter-disciplinary research organisations (for example the UCL Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning (CSML), the UCL Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology (CoMPLEX), the Centre for Doctoral Training in Financial Computing & Data Science, the UCL Energy Institute, and the Alan Turing Institute). Staff members also collaborate directly with hospitals, power companies, government regulators, and the financial sector. Consequently, research students have ample opportunity to engage with external institutions in order to frame their work.

Teaching and learning

Research areas and structure.

The department’s methodological research is organised into six themes:

Research often cuts across these themes. For example, externally funded projects in the following application areas are in progress:

Much of this work is interdisciplinary and involves collaborations within and outside UCL.

Research environment

The Department of Statistical Science has played a major role in the development of the subject since its foundation in 1911 as the first department of statistics in the world, with Karl Pearson as its head. Since then, many famous names in statistics have been associated with the department, including Egon Pearson, R. A. Fisher and Jerzy Neyman. Today the Department is among the three largest statistics groups in the UK with more than 30 academic members of staff and a research grant income of over seven million pounds.

A particular feature of Statistical Science is its applicability to practical problems. This is reflected in the wide range of current application areas, including cognitive neuroscience, ecology, econometrics, finance, epidemiology, environmetrics, machine learning, population and systems biology, statistical imaging, energy economics. Much of this work is interdisciplinary, involving collaborations within and outside UCL. You will have the opportunity to present your research at external conferences and our student-run departmental PhD conference and can gain valuable experience by teaching on our taught course programmes.

The department has strong connections with inter-disciplinary research organisations, such as the UCL Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology (CoMPLEX), the Centre for Doctoral Training in Financial Computing & Data Science, the UCL Energy Institute and the Alan Turing Institute. Staff members also collaborate directly with hospitals, power companies, government regulators, and the financial sector.

You are initially registered for the MPhil degree. No sooner than nine months after registration, you are transferred to the PhD degree with retrospective effect if you show a capacity for original work. This will require the preparation of a substantial upgrade report describing the existing work in the area of investigation, giving details of the original work that you have performed so far, and setting out a plan for the remaining period of your research. It will also involve a viva.

The typical length of the PhD programme is three years for full-time students and five years for part-time students; an MPhil might be achievable in less. If you are not ready to submit at the end of the third year, you may be able to register as a completing research student (CRS) while you write up your thesis.

The MPhil/PhD has no required curriculum. However, you are expected to agree on a customised programme of study with your supervisor, which may involve specialisation courses (either at UCL or externally, for example, at the London Taught Course Centre or Academy for PhD Training in Statistics) or independent reading. Attendance at research seminars is encouraged, and after you have been upgraded to PhD status you are required to present your research in a seminar stream dedicated to this purpose. Finally, the UCL Doctoral School has its own requirements for training courses. In particular, you are required to attend Research Integrity Training.

1 in 2 applicants to this programme received an offer.

Data shown above is for entry in academic year 2020/21 (sources) .

Previous Years

Why are there inexact numbers? For data protection reasons, when the number of applications, offers, or admissions is low for a given course (or in some cases, regardless of the numbers), some universities report only approximate numbers. Based on these, we have computed the range of possible values.

Data sources

The acceptance rate , or offer rate, represents the fraction of applicants who received an offer. Note that this will be generally lower the acceptances rates (acceptances divided by applicants) published by many other sources. This article explains it in more detail. The acceptances generally indicate the number of offer holders who accepted the offer and fulfilled its conditions. For some universities, however, it denotes the number of applicants who accepted the offer, regardless of whether they subsequently met its conditions.

Data Reliability

Unless otherwise noted, the data presented comes from the universities and is generally reliable. However, some of the differences between years and/or courses may be due to different counting methodologies or data gathering errors. This may especially be the case if there is a sharp difference from year to year. If the data does not look right, click the "Report" button located near the top of the page.

SEMINAR by Simone Maxand (Europa-Universität Viadrina)

University College London

Founded in 1826, UCL is London’s leading multidisciplinary university, with more than 13,000 staff and 42,000 students from 150 different countries. We are a diverse community in the heart of London, with the freedom and courage to challenge, question and think differently. Through a progressive approach to teaching and research, our world leading academics, curious students and outstanding staff continually pursue excellence, break boundaries and make an impact on real world problems.

Departments of Mathematics and Statistical Science

UCL contributes to the Martingale Scholarships through its two departments of Mathematics and Statistical Science. Mathematics was one of a small number of disciplines established at UCL’s foundation in 1826. The Department of Statistical Science , founded in 1911, was the first statistics department to be established anywhere in the world. Today the two departments, Mathematics and Statistical Science, work closely together as constituent parts of UCL’s Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (IMSS).

The departments have a vibrant, diverse community of over 100 academic staff, hundreds of postgraduate students and thousands of undergraduates. They welcome a regular stream of distinguished visiting academics from home and abroad. The broad range of research interests cover many areas of modern pure and applied mathematics, including pure and applied analysis, statistical methodology, geometry and topology, number theory, inverse problems, fluid dynamics, mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, and financial mathematics.

Following the latest Research Excellence Framework assessment, mathematical sciences at UCL is currently ranked 8 in the UK in terms of research power. For the mathematics unit of submission, 97.9% of UCL’s papers were graded as 4* world leading or 3* internationally excellent, the second highest of any at UCL.

Available course

The following course will be available for full funding through the martingale foundation:, integrated phd in mathematics and statistical sciences.

UCL will offer Martingale Scholars a four-year integrated PhD programme. Year 1 will be based on the structure that UCL has successfully implemented in centres for doctoral training (CDTs). Scholars will be matched with a mentor, who will provide academic and pastoral support, aiding the transition to a research career. Scholars will work with their mentor in Year 1 to identify relevant taught courses and seminars offered by departments and affiliated CDTs.

Scholars will also be matched with a small group of potential supervisors, who will provide access and insight into relevant research projects. Scholars will work with this supervisory group to develop their research interests, and to identify potential research questions and a lead supervisor for PhD thesis in Years 2-4.

Application Process

Applications will be via UCL’s online system, here for applications at the Department of Mathematics , and here for applications at the Department of Statistical Science.

The minimum entry requirement is a 2:1 in a relevant bachelor’s degree in or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. You must also provide the following documents:

Your official transcript. Please read our guide on getting your academic transcript. This explains exactly what UCL can and cannot accept. Sending documents that cannot be accepted will delay your application being processed.

A research proposal. Your research proposal is an important part of your application. It should outline the area of research you wish to undertake, demonstrate your knowledge of the subject area and summarise the question you want to answer through your research.

Details of two referees. At least one of these must be an academic reference, but if your most recent academic qualification was more than five years ago this can be substituted by a reference for research experience gained during employment.

Eligible candidates are always interviewed by a panel of academic staff. Virtual interviews via Teams or Zoom can be arranged, as needed.

In compliance with university regulations, registration is initially for an MPhil degree. Students who make satisfactory progress will have their registration transferred to a PhD, usually after 12 to 18 months.

The deadline for applications to the integrated PhD in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is 6 February 2023 .

Jeremias Knoblauch

Jeremias Knoblauch

Assistant professor and epsrc fellow in statistics & machine learning, university college london (ucl).

I am currently Assistant Professor/Lecturer at UCL’s Department of Statistical Science. For the next 3 years, I will be bought out of teaching and administrative duties with an EPSRC research fellowship to continue my work on Optimisation-centric Generalisations of Bayesian Inference . I am also a visiting researcher at the Alan Turing Institute’s Data-Centric Engineering Programme, as well as an advisor for HopStair .

My research revolves around extending the paradigm of Bayesian inference to cope with the challenges posed by modern large-scale data, simulator models, and machine learning techniques. In this context, I am particularly interested in generalised Bayesian inference, model misspecification and robustification strategies, computational challenges involving intractability, and variational methods. If you would like to learn more about my research, I have summarised some of my key contributions in the following talk .

Prior to UCL, I was a doctoral candidate within the Oxford-Warwick Statistics programme (2016-2022) as well as the first UK-based Facebook Fellow (2020/2021). During that time, I also worked with the research arms of Amazon (2019) and DeepMind (2021). I remain eager to stay in close contact with industry, and am very open to being approached by potential industrial partners for both academic and non-academic work.

Research Mission

Optimisation-centric generalisations of Bayesian inference

Bayesian methods require assumptions that are often misaligned with the realities of modern day inference. It is my conviction that we can overcome these challenges with an optimisation-centric generalisation of Bayes' rule.

Research group & Supervision

I am currently setting up my own research group, and so I will take on new PhD students from diverse social and academic backgrounds . Candidates should have a strong background in statistics, computer science, mathematics, econometrics, physics, or a related discipline and be passionate about research. It is important to me that my students are supervised well, and since I have no teaching or administrative duties over the coming years, I can focus on supervision for a large part of my time.

If you are interested, please do get in touch with me directly and send through transcripts as well as a CV. You are not required to have a clear thought-out research plan before getting in touch with me. Please email me at j dot knoblauch at ucl dot ac dot uk.

I am offering a few master’s projects this year that will be circulated at the department. If you are interested in any of these or have an alternative idea that you think would fit within my research remit, please get in touch with me. Please email me at j dot knoblauch at ucl dot ac dot uk.
