Technologies are becoming increasingly complicated and increasingly interconnected. Cars, airplanes, medical devices, financial transactions, and electricity systems all rely on more computer software than they ever have before, making them seem both harder to understand and, in some cases, harder to control. Government and corporate surveillance of individuals and information processing relies largely on digital technologies and artificial intelligence, and therefore involves less human-to-human contact than ever before and more opportunities for biases to be embedded and codified in our technological systems in ways we may not even be able to identify or recognize. Bioengineering advances are opening up new terrain for challenging philosophical, political, and economic questions regarding human-natural relations. Additionally, the management of these large and small devices and systems is increasingly done through the cloud, so that control over them is both very remote and removed from direct human or social control. The study of how to make technologies like artificial intelligence or the Internet of Things “explainable” has become its own area of research because it is so difficult to understand how they work or what is at fault when something goes wrong (Gunning and Aha 2019) .

This growing complexity makes it more difficult than ever—and more imperative than ever—for scholars to probe how technological advancements are altering life around the world in both positive and negative ways and what social, political, and legal tools are needed to help shape the development and design of technology in beneficial directions. This can seem like an impossible task in light of the rapid pace of technological change and the sense that its continued advancement is inevitable, but many countries around the world are only just beginning to take significant steps toward regulating computer technologies and are still in the process of radically rethinking the rules governing global data flows and exchange of technology across borders.

These are exciting times not just for technological development but also for technology policy—our technologies may be more advanced and complicated than ever but so, too, are our understandings of how they can best be leveraged, protected, and even constrained. The structures of technological systems as determined largely by government and institutional policies and those structures have tremendous implications for social organization and agency, ranging from open source, open systems that are highly distributed and decentralized, to those that are tightly controlled and closed, structured according to stricter and more hierarchical models. And just as our understanding of the governance of technology is developing in new and interesting ways, so, too, is our understanding of the social, cultural, environmental, and political dimensions of emerging technologies. We are realizing both the challenges and the importance of mapping out the full range of ways that technology is changing our society, what we want those changes to look like, and what tools we have to try to influence and guide those shifts.

Technology can be a source of tremendous optimism. It can help overcome some of the greatest challenges our society faces, including climate change, famine, and disease. For those who believe in the power of innovation and the promise of creative destruction to advance economic development and lead to better quality of life, technology is a vital economic driver (Schumpeter 1942) . But it can also be a tool of tremendous fear and oppression, embedding biases in automated decision-making processes and information-processing algorithms, exacerbating economic and social inequalities within and between countries to a staggering degree, or creating new weapons and avenues for attack unlike any we have had to face in the past. Scholars have even contended that the emergence of the term technology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries marked a shift from viewing individual pieces of machinery as a means to achieving political and social progress to the more dangerous, or hazardous, view that larger-scale, more complex technological systems were a semiautonomous form of progress in and of themselves (Marx 2010) . More recently, technologists have sharply criticized what they view as a wave of new Luddites, people intent on slowing the development of technology and turning back the clock on innovation as a means of mitigating the societal impacts of technological change (Marlowe 1970) .

At the heart of fights over new technologies and their resulting global changes are often two conflicting visions of technology: a fundamentally optimistic one that believes humans use it as a tool to achieve greater goals, and a fundamentally pessimistic one that holds that technological systems have reached a point beyond our control. Technology philosophers have argued that neither of these views is wholly accurate and that a purely optimistic or pessimistic view of technology is insufficient to capture the nuances and complexity of our relationship to technology (Oberdiek and Tiles 1995) . Understanding technology and how we can make better decisions about designing, deploying, and refining it requires capturing that nuance and complexity through in-depth analysis of the impacts of different technological advancements and the ways they have played out in all their complicated and controversial messiness across the world.

These impacts are often unpredictable as technologies are adopted in new contexts and come to be used in ways that sometimes diverge significantly from the use cases envisioned by their designers. The internet, designed to help transmit information between computer networks, became a crucial vehicle for commerce, introducing unexpected avenues for crime and financial fraud. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, designed to connect friends and families through sharing photographs and life updates, became focal points of election controversies and political influence. Cryptocurrencies, originally intended as a means of decentralized digital cash, have become a significant environmental hazard as more and more computing resources are devoted to mining these forms of virtual money. One of the crucial challenges in this area is therefore recognizing, documenting, and even anticipating some of these unexpected consequences and providing mechanisms to technologists for how to think through the impacts of their work, as well as possible other paths to different outcomes (Verbeek 2006) . And just as technological innovations can cause unexpected harm, they can also bring about extraordinary benefits—new vaccines and medicines to address global pandemics and save thousands of lives, new sources of energy that can drastically reduce emissions and help combat climate change, new modes of education that can reach people who would otherwise have no access to schooling. Regulating technology therefore requires a careful balance of mitigating risks without overly restricting potentially beneficial innovations.

Nations around the world have taken very different approaches to governing emerging technologies and have adopted a range of different technologies themselves in pursuit of more modern governance structures and processes (Braman 2009) . In Europe, the precautionary principle has guided much more anticipatory regulation aimed at addressing the risks presented by technologies even before they are fully realized. For instance, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation focuses on the responsibilities of data controllers and processors to provide individuals with access to their data and information about how that data is being used not just as a means of addressing existing security and privacy threats, such as data breaches, but also to protect against future developments and uses of that data for artificial intelligence and automated decision-making purposes. In Germany, Technische Überwachungsvereine, or TÜVs, perform regular tests and inspections of technological systems to assess and minimize risks over time, as the tech landscape evolves. In the United States, by contrast, there is much greater reliance on litigation and liability regimes to address safety and security failings after-the-fact. These different approaches reflect not just the different legal and regulatory mechanisms and philosophies of different nations but also the different ways those nations prioritize rapid development of the technology industry versus safety, security, and individual control. Typically, governance innovations move much more slowly than technological innovations, and regulations can lag years, or even decades, behind the technologies they aim to govern.

In addition to this varied set of national regulatory approaches, a variety of international and nongovernmental organizations also contribute to the process of developing standards, rules, and norms for new technologies, including the International Organization for Standardization and the International Telecommunication Union. These multilateral and NGO actors play an especially important role in trying to define appropriate boundaries for the use of new technologies by governments as instruments of control for the state.

At the same time that policymakers are under scrutiny both for their decisions about how to regulate technology as well as their decisions about how and when to adopt technologies like facial recognition themselves, technology firms and designers have also come under increasing criticism. Growing recognition that the design of technologies can have far-reaching social and political implications means that there is more pressure on technologists to take into consideration the consequences of their decisions early on in the design process (Vincenti 1993; Winner 1980) . The question of how technologists should incorporate these social dimensions into their design and development processes is an old one, and debate on these issues dates back to the 1970s, but it remains an urgent and often overlooked part of the puzzle because so many of the supposedly systematic mechanisms for assessing the impacts of new technologies in both the private and public sectors are primarily bureaucratic, symbolic processes rather than carrying any real weight or influence.

Technologists are often ill-equipped or unwilling to respond to the sorts of social problems that their creations have—often unwittingly—exacerbated, and instead point to governments and lawmakers to address those problems (Zuckerberg 2019) . But governments often have few incentives to engage in this area. This is because setting clear standards and rules for an ever-evolving technological landscape can be extremely challenging, because enforcement of those rules can be a significant undertaking requiring considerable expertise, and because the tech sector is a major source of jobs and revenue for many countries that may fear losing those benefits if they constrain companies too much. This indicates not just a need for clearer incentives and better policies for both private- and public-sector entities but also a need for new mechanisms whereby the technology development and design process can be influenced and assessed by people with a wider range of experiences and expertise. If we want technologies to be designed with an eye to their impacts, who is responsible for predicting, measuring, and mitigating those impacts throughout the design process? Involving policymakers in that process in a more meaningful way will also require training them to have the analytic and technical capacity to more fully engage with technologists and understand more fully the implications of their decisions.

At the same time that tech companies seem unwilling or unable to rein in their creations, many also fear they wield too much power, in some cases all but replacing governments and international organizations in their ability to make decisions that affect millions of people worldwide and control access to information, platforms, and audiences (Kilovaty 2020) . Regulators around the world have begun considering whether some of these companies have become so powerful that they violate the tenets of antitrust laws, but it can be difficult for governments to identify exactly what those violations are, especially in the context of an industry where the largest players often provide their customers with free services. And the platforms and services developed by tech companies are often wielded most powerfully and dangerously not directly by their private-sector creators and operators but instead by states themselves for widespread misinformation campaigns that serve political purposes (Nye 2018) .

Since the largest private entities in the tech sector operate in many countries, they are often better poised to implement global changes to the technological ecosystem than individual states or regulatory bodies, creating new challenges to existing governance structures and hierarchies. Just as it can be challenging to provide oversight for government use of technologies, so, too, oversight of the biggest tech companies, which have more resources, reach, and power than many nations, can prove to be a daunting task. The rise of network forms of organization and the growing gig economy have added to these challenges, making it even harder for regulators to fully address the breadth of these companies’ operations (Powell 1990) . The private-public partnerships that have emerged around energy, transportation, medical, and cyber technologies further complicate this picture, blurring the line between the public and private sectors and raising critical questions about the role of each in providing critical infrastructure, health care, and security. How can and should private tech companies operating in these different sectors be governed, and what types of influence do they exert over regulators? How feasible are different policy proposals aimed at technological innovation, and what potential unintended consequences might they have?

Conflict between countries has also spilled over significantly into the private sector in recent years, most notably in the case of tensions between the United States and China over which technologies developed in each country will be permitted by the other and which will be purchased by other customers, outside those two countries. Countries competing to develop the best technology is not a new phenomenon, but the current conflicts have major international ramifications and will influence the infrastructure that is installed and used around the world for years to come. Untangling the different factors that feed into these tussles as well as whom they benefit and whom they leave at a disadvantage is crucial for understanding how governments can most effectively foster technological innovation and invention domestically as well as the global consequences of those efforts. As much of the world is forced to choose between buying technology from the United States or from China, how should we understand the long-term impacts of those choices and the options available to people in countries without robust domestic tech industries? Does the global spread of technologies help fuel further innovation in countries with smaller tech markets, or does it reinforce the dominance of the states that are already most prominent in this sector? How can research universities maintain global collaborations and research communities in light of these national competitions, and what role does government research and development spending play in fostering innovation within its own borders and worldwide? How should intellectual property protections evolve to meet the demands of the technology industry, and how can those protections be enforced globally?

These conflicts between countries sometimes appear to challenge the feasibility of truly global technologies and networks that operate across all countries through standardized protocols and design features. Organizations like the International Organization for Standardization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and many others have tried to harmonize these policies and protocols across different countries for years, but have met with limited success when it comes to resolving the issues of greatest tension and disagreement among nations. For technology to operate in a global environment, there is a need for a much greater degree of coordination among countries and the development of common standards and norms, but governments continue to struggle to agree not just on those norms themselves but even the appropriate venue and processes for developing them. Without greater global cooperation, is it possible to maintain a global network like the internet or to promote the spread of new technologies around the world to address challenges of sustainability? What might help incentivize that cooperation moving forward, and what could new structures and process for governance of global technologies look like? Why has the tech industry’s self-regulation culture persisted? Do the same traditional drivers for public policy, such as politics of harmonization and path dependency in policy-making, still sufficiently explain policy outcomes in this space? As new technologies and their applications spread across the globe in uneven ways, how and when do they create forces of change from unexpected places?

These are some of the questions that we hope to address in the Technology and Global Change section through articles that tackle new dimensions of the global landscape of designing, developing, deploying, and assessing new technologies to address major challenges the world faces. Understanding these processes requires synthesizing knowledge from a range of different fields, including sociology, political science, economics, and history, as well as technical fields such as engineering, climate science, and computer science. A crucial part of understanding how technology has created global change and, in turn, how global changes have influenced the development of new technologies is understanding the technologies themselves in all their richness and complexity—how they work, the limits of what they can do, what they were designed to do, how they are actually used. Just as technologies themselves are becoming more complicated, so are their embeddings and relationships to the larger social, political, and legal contexts in which they exist. Scholars across all disciplines are encouraged to join us in untangling those complexities.

Thesis Statement on Modern Technology

Thesis Statement on Modern Technology

Overcome the first years of the 21st century, society is fully immersed in the so-called society of the information. The vast majority of protagonists every day of this new reality in many areas of his daily life: computers are part of our everyday landscape, telephones, mobile phones accompany us from an early age and the Internet has been inserted completely in our daily chores through the crowd of services that it offers us.

Thesis statement about technology

The integration of these information technologies and communication in homes seems unstoppable, serving us this data as an indicator of the capacity for acceptance and assimilation technology of society. However, there is no need to lose. This circumstance leads us to think that the extension and practices that are deployed around this thesis statement about technology in the household can be influenced, among other factors, by the nature and characteristics of the family institution. In parallel, the use that makes them, with all their peculiarities, can affect the own family life and the relationships established between their members.

HIRE WRITER

Surveys and reports have proliferated in recent years that allude to the degree of penetration and use of these new technologies in the domestic sphere; however, they are much more limited – almost non-existent – studies that take into account their character dual mediated and mediating element in family life. It is because of that it seemed to us convenient to carry out this research aimed at study of the interactions between family and technology. In our thesis statement about technology, we will consider the different structural and cultural aspects that influence the use of these technologies within this institution.

We will analyze the mutual influences in the relationship that parents and children maintain with these technologies and we will see the different strategies families deploy to integrate them into their routines, in a process that is not always exempt from tensions and conflicts.

Finally, and according to our starting assumption, we understand that by showing the behaviors and activities deployed by the family in relation to information technologies and communication we reflect the relationships and internal dynamics of the family. In this way, we trust that this study will contribute to a better understanding of the state and dynamics of family relationships and in particular of paternal-filial relationships, an aspect of the family to the that there has not been much empirical attention in our country and which is a cause of deep concern in our society.

Technology thesis statement

The term information society is commonly used, along with other terms such as information society, cyber society, village global, knowledge society, interconnected society or society digital, to allude to a new stage of evolution of society in the generation, storage, distribution and processing of information acquire a fundamental relevance.

For Manuel Castells, what characterizes the new technology thesis statement -a term that prefers the most widespread of information society – is that generation, processing and transmission of information become the fundamental sources of productivity and power, and this is linked to the development of certain technologies: the new information technologies and the communication1.

In short, technology thesis statement, the new social and cultural order configured as the result of a technological revolution of the information, which has its genesis in the progress and convergence of information technology and telecommunications, and that it affects all areas of social life.

The family home is one of those areas that have been seen colonized by these information and communication technologies and, therefore, where they can potentially be reaching a great impact, modifying habits and customs of the members that they make up the family unit. In this sense, during the last years

Numerous experts have shown their concern in line with technology thesis statement for the future of the family in a highly technological domestic environment. Also the man of the street feels uneasy about the possible consequences that the introduction of these technologies may have had, or are having, about their children and their family relationships. In the midst of the family crisis traditional nuclear, crisis of parental authority, redefinition of roles relatives, etc., parents have lived with uncertainty and insecurity, but also with great expectations, the entry of new elements whose management is presumed fundamental to achieve a full integration in the new society.

Indeed, the process of massive insertion of technologies of the information and communication in homes is taking place in context of profound change and redefinition of the family institution.

This family change results from the adaptation of this institution to accelerated transformation of the broader social reality in which enroll That metamorphosis of the family, which encompasses both elements of quantitative nature – structure and composition of households – as qualitative – internal family relationships – is essential in the form in which families live the process of incorporating these technology thesis statement in the domestic and family environment.

With regard to family morphology, we can highlight the decrease in family size resulting from the important decline that has experienced the number of children and the coexistence of the family nuclear with other types of family and forms of coexistence more reduced.

Single-parent families, recomposed families, or households unipersonal and cohabiting couples are structures of coexistence that have experienced significant growth in our country, being now widely accepted socially. In this section,

We have excellent studios that are interested in transformations experienced by the family structure, in which, generally, a crisis of the traditional nuclear family is exposed crumbles and fragments into a multitude of types and models of coexistence. However, the couple with children continues to be the way to life mostly chosen by the Spaniards, and what is still appreciated as the ideal model of coexistence.

Simultaneously, and although less studied, we also attend profound redefinition of conjugal roles, loss of authority of the father, decline of generational conflict. In short, democratization of couple and parent-child relationships that, without

However, it does not seem to have had an effect on a more equitable distribution of domestic work and family responsibilities whose burden continues basically supporting the mother-woman, this aspect becoming a source of family tension.

Thesis statement on technology

Behind the various variables that have been associated with this evolution of the family in welfare societies – changes basic demographics, massive incorporation of women into education and to the labor market, transformation of the social perception of marriage, etcetera-, a series of broader social phenomena are glimpsed and hardly measurable that has also found their place in the family. Individualism, as a value that implies the legitimacy of the search for self-fulfillment and personal well-being, enter the family colliding directly with its solidary nature and putting in check the institution itself. Likewise, the family is being subjected to rationalizing process that involves questioning some of its basic principles never discussed before. Both factors configure as a serious threat that causes innumerable contradictions and tensions in family life.

It is this situation of transformation of the family institution, to the that a global social change associated with the development and implementation of information and communication technologies, and that it also has its effects on the domestic sphere, which has called our attention In particular, we are concerned about the extent to which interactions that information and communication thesis statement on technology with the family condition their extension and social uses in virtue of the diffusion that these artifacts are reaching in homes family, as well as the interference of these devices on the development and evolution of family relationships.

Thesis statements about technology

In the academic and scientific field, we find background of interest in the relationships between technologies and family among already classical authors who wondered about the important and rapid changes in family life forms and family relationships resulting from new technological developments and new ones forms of communication.

With often, social research on technology has focused its attention to the social impact of this, drifting towards a determinism thesis statements about technology that presupposes that the revolutionary change in the design of technologies inevitably leads to equivalent changes in the way where we live Often, this premise has derived in studies prospective that analyze the effects of the new “mills” on any social sphere, limiting itself to extrapolating trends on the basis of the implicit potentialities that these technologies manifest.

Starting from this approach, it is not surprising that generated catastrophic or optimistic visions in excess. The emphasis excessive in the positive or negative qualities of the technologies in the literature to the case has made exaggerated visions prevail that present these information and communication technologies, as well as a threat that looms over all areas of our existence, or on the contrary, as a great opportunity to improve our world.

In this thesis statement about technology we want to escape from these limited visions that lead to extreme conclusions. For this, we rely on a basic sociological assumption that tells us that technologies are used and developed in specific social and cultural contexts; the which means that this idea, implicit in the “studies of impact “, that the technological devices are assimilated without any problematic and that produce linear effects on the system of social relationships.

From there, thesis statements about technology are presented to us as an instrument at the service of man whose effects on our lives will be delimited, not only by their potential and the degree of penetration achieved in a society, but also by the way in which society and individuals integrate these technologies into their habits and daily practices, that is, by the forms of use that are developed around them. Therefore, we assume that technologies act fundamentally as reinforces or disintegrators of attitudes and previously existing behaviors, being able to speak of an effect of acceleration or hindering social processes and trends existing;

Obviously, this position does not mean denying the possible effects that technological artifacts can have on society or the family. On the contrary, in our study we started from the assumption that relations between family and technology are more complex. So that, to know the effects that these technologies have on the family relationships, we must take into account the inherent aspects of the nature and structure of the family that, together with other factors social and cultural factors, determine the use of these devices in the home.

From the above, it is inferred that the position of the family in the social structure, as well as that occupied by its members within the family structure, mediates the relationship of the subjects with the technologies of information and communication in the home. The position that individuals occupy within the social structure endows families with certain material and cultural resources. In parallel, the position that function of sex and age are assigned within the family structure determines the distribution of certain resources among its members. These two interrelated elements act to favor or hinder the implementation of these goods and services in the family and defining the attitudes and practices that develop around them, allowing us see the family as an intermediate institution between the individual and the society.

How Technology Changed Society

Through the years, we've watched technology grow like a child budding into adulthood: It starts out mostly crying and pooping, then crawling, gradually learning to walk, and finally able to run at a speed we all wish we could keep up with. We've seen technology fail, and we've seen it succeed. We've poked fun at it when it doesn't make sense, and we've praised it when it's absolutely brilliant. We've yelled at it when it runs out of power, and we've fixed or replaced it when it gets run down.

We treat technology as a family member—even if that is a little co-dependent. You can't blame us, though; it's certainly made aspects of our lives easier: We're no longer forced to send letters through the postal service, book vacations through travel agents, shop in stores, visit the library for research material, or wait for our photos to be developed. Thanks to technology, all of these activities can be performed either digitally or online.

At the same time, though, technology can make life more convoluted—especially when something doesn't work right or doesn't do what it's supposed to: Say, for instance, a GPS device tells you to turn the wrong way on a one-way street (yikes! ), or a computer erases all of your important data (ouch! ). Unfortunately, it's not always easy to understand how a product or service works, not to mention whether or not to hold off on adopting it until a better, shinier thing comes along. A perfect example is the ever-evolving video format.

We've gone from Betamax to VHS to DVD to HD DVD/Blu-ray to just Blu-ray (and everything in-between, of course). It can take years before a technology catches on, and even more time before we see a significant price drop. For the most part, however, technology does us more good than harm: It's reconnected us with old college roommates, helped us learn a foreign language, and encouraged us to exercise. Follow us as we look back at how technology has changed our lives—for the better and for the worse—in terms of communication, computing, dining, entertainment, and travel.

Even electric cars are powered by electricity generated by fossil fuels. Car accidents are also a very big killer worldwide and many lives have been lost because of car accidents/incidents. I believe that for every advantage that technology brings us, it also brings us a disadvantage at the same time.

I need a thesis for technology and how it has changed the way people learn

amvtop10 1 / 3   May 14, 2011   #1 I need help in wording this into a thesis. So, I am doing my research project on technology. What I am trying to explain with technology is like technology has changed the way people learn. Like for example, people don't need to ask a teacher for help anymore or don't need to go to the library to find information. or meet up with someone for help. They can do it online. Or text. Cellphones etc. But I also need more ideas because I don't think I can write a 15 page paper with just how technology changed the way people learn. Also when writing a research paper. Can you support both side? Like though technology helps people it is also bad for ones health.

start208 14 / 68   May 14, 2011   #2 Hello there; See this simple introduction and try to enlarge it. ( it would also be better if you comment it; we may discuss it together). It goes without saying that technology has been envancing the way people learn and makes it easy and more exciting than ever. No more fear from going to school early, meet teachers and waste time looking for books on large library shelves. Nowadays with the new technology people save time, money and energy. They can do huge number of important things in short time, with simple click while stying in their beds. However, technology has got a number of disadvantages.

OP amvtop10 1 / 3   May 14, 2011   #3 Actually that was a good introduction. Now I don't want to do the disadvanages . I want to speak about all the advanage about technology with the way we learn. But how would I do this? They said I need sources. So what should I be looking for?

How to Write a Thesis Statement | 4 Steps & Examples

Published on January 11, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on September 14, 2022 by Eoghan Ryan.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . It usually comes near the end of your introduction .

Your thesis will look a bit different depending on the type of essay you’re writing. But the thesis statement should always clearly state the main idea you want to get across. Everything else in your essay should relate back to this idea.

You can write your thesis statement by following four simple steps:

Table of contents

What is a thesis statement, placement of the thesis statement, step 1: start with a question, step 2: write your initial answer, step 3: develop your answer, step 4: refine your thesis statement, types of thesis statements, frequently asked questions about thesis statements.

A thesis statement summarizes the central points of your essay. It is a signpost telling the reader what the essay will argue and why.

The best thesis statements are:

The thesis statement generally appears at the end of your essay introduction or research paper introduction .

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education: the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.

What can proofreading do for your paper?

Scribbr editors not only correct grammar and spelling mistakes, but also strengthen your writing by making sure your paper is free of vague language, redundant words, and awkward phrasing.

You should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called a working thesis , early in the writing process . As soon as you’ve decided on your essay topic , you need to work out what you want to say about it—a clear thesis will give your essay direction and structure.

You might already have a question in your assignment, but if not, try to come up with your own. What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?

For example, you might ask:

After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage it can be simple, and it should guide the research process and writing process .

Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get more detailed.

In your essay about the internet and education, the thesis states your position and sketches out the key arguments you’ll use to support it.

The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education because it facilitates easier access to information.

In your essay about braille, the thesis statement summarizes the key historical development that you’ll explain.

The invention of braille in the 19th century transformed the lives of blind people, allowing them to participate more actively in public life.

A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:

The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.

These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.

Your thesis statement should match the goals of your essay, which vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing:

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

Follow these four steps to come up with a thesis statement :

The thesis statement should be placed at the end of your essay introduction .

How Tech Has Changed Our Lives In The Last 10 Years

Several tech experts weigh in on the technologies of the past decade that had the greatest impact on society.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

From NPR News, this is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. I'm Ari Shapiro. And...

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

MICHELE NORRIS: I'm Michele Norris.

MELISSA BLOCK: I'm Melissa Block, and it's time now for All Tech Considered.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

SHAPIRO: That is how the first All Tech Considered of the decade began on January 4, 2010. Sad to say, Michele and Melissa are not here in the studio with me this Christmas Day. A lot has changed since then - hosts of this program and technology.

In a minute, we'll look ahead to the next decade in tech. Before we do, let's revisit this one. We asked three experts to pick what they see as the most significant ways tech has changed our lives since 2009. The most obvious advancement was the smartphone. They were around in 2009, but now 81% of Americans own one. And technology reporter Omar Gallaga says they've almost become an appendage.

OMAR GALLAGA: I was in a restaurant over the weekend, and, you know, just across from me, a woman's phone was going off every five seconds. You know, I heard a chime or an alert - you know, different alerts out of her phone every - and I'm, like, how is she functioning as a human in this world? You know, she didn't even notice that those alerts were going off. I mean, that's how much a part of her life they must be, so...

SHAPIRO: And it's not just the phones. Gallaga's daughters, who are 10 and 12, have tablets. He says kids these days just go through life differently from a decade ago.

GALLAGA: When you see kids at the doctor's office looking at magazines, and they're trying to, like, you know, scroll the page (laughter), the print page - like, yeah. Yep, that's an iPad kid right there.

SHAPIRO: Next, we turn to Erin Hatton. She is an associate professor of sociology at the University at Buffalo. And for her, the most significant change of the decade is something that would not have been possible without the smartphone - it's the gig economy, enabled by apps like Uber, TaskRabbit and Airbnb. Hatton says they've redefined what it is to be a worker.

ERIN HATTON: I think that this work has started new conversations between workers and across sectors in rethinking what it means to be a worker and potentially rethinking what kinds of benefits and protections we attach to work.

SHAPIRO: Beyond our daily lives or our work, tech in the last decade has also shaped what we believe to be true. Sometimes we know we're being faked, like in Martin Scorsese's movie "The Irishman." Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, who are both in their 70s, look much younger thanks to technology. In some scenes, they're in their 40s.

(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "THE IRISHMAN")

JOE PESCI: (As Russell Bufalino) What's the problem, kid?

ROBERT DE NIRO: (As Frank Sheeran) I don't know. It sounds funny - stops and starts and loses power.

PESCI: (As Russell Bufalino) I can give you a hand.

SHAPIRO: It's believable. Of course, there is a darker side of this technology, too. Michael Fink is a professor of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, and he says it's easier than ever before to manipulate videos and make it seem like something happened when it never did.

MICHAEL FINK: The software has become so powerful that things can be altered, changed, modified so quickly that people would think, oh, my god. That has to be real. It just happened. And that's not true. The reality is fungible. It can be used by dark forces - let's put it that way - people with absolutely nothing but malevolence at the core of their being. And it's scary.

Impact of Technology on Communication Essay

Introduction, advancement of technology in communication, media technology and online communication, the impacts of mobile phone on communication, reference list.

The realm of technology is ever-changing. New advances in applied science have forever transformed the way people interact. Exploring the impact of technology on communication and debating whether people connect with others differently seems to be the topic of the day.

Technology has allowed people to keep in touch no matter the distance. One is able to communicate 24 hours around the clock, seven days a week, 365 days on an interpersonal level.

What are the real impacts of technology on communication? How do electronics mediate and change the ways in which humans interact? How has the emergence of the Internet, mobile phones and social networks affected society and businesses?

In order to reveal the importance of technology in communication, the essay tries to find answers to these questions. It explores how everything changes over the years and discusses the connection between technology and communication.

To begin this examination and find answers to these questions, we begin by defining media and communication and outlining the stages of technological advancement from old age to the present day in the field of communication. The paper will highlight the use of internet, newspaper, radio and other media but it mostly dwell on the use of mobile telephony.

Communication is “the imparting or exchange of information by speaking, writing or using some other medium” (Daniel & Rod, 2011). On the other hand media is defined as “the main means of mass communication (television, radio and newspapers) regarded collectively.”

Technology has changed everything in the modern society. The way we communicate has been revolutionized by the advancement of new innovation in the telecommunication sector. Connecting with other people with ease is more feasible in today’s world and this is due to speed.

Several centuries ago books and news papers reigned as the only choice of communication. Then later, innovators brought the radio and television before innovation was taken a notch higher with coming of the personal computer (Johnson, 1997, p.3).

With every new innovation, the reliance on books and newspaper as the mass medium of communication continued to reduce. With time, the human culture has come to understand the power and the mechanisms involved in technology and invention. In today’s world the information has permeated in the cycles of change and development.

The world today, past and present can be studied at ease with the growing information technology. The technology has advanced with sheer velocity allowing different media to shape our thinking and habits. The people who were born during the television era thought that it was the climax of innovation but they suddenly found themselves acclimating to a new medium of the World Wide Web.

Every time a new medium rolls out the perceptions towards the previous media you were used to changes (Johnson, 1997 p5). Technology proved to be powerful in the sense that no human being can predict what will change and what won’t with certainty.

The irony of it all is the fact that the influence of technology extends beyond generations to come. It is with no doubt that technology has changed the lives of human beings; information and entertainment is being received in a more convenient way.

The innovation of having a conversation using a devise called telephone changed everything in communication. This became magical and one couldn’t believe such innovation would exist (Tofts, 1997, p.40)

With the emergence of new media technologies consumers have been empowered to ‘filter’ the information they want to receive. This allow them have a choice of which news to watch or what information to listen to (Palmer, 2003 p.161).

Media consumption has been made an engaging experience with marketers studying the preferences of the consumers in order to reflect broader social changes in the society. In today’s world, computer is seen as a multi-purpose machine with work and leisure functions therefore creating more value.

The rise of internet has also made it possible to have virtual offices where the user can work from home or any convenient location. The flow of information from different media has greatly changed the social structures of the society at different levels (Barry, 1999).

Digital media has enabled news and event to be channeled in real time. The combination of internet and commerce has given birth to e-commerce sites providing huge potential for the marketers to reach out to the virtual communities.

In the world today, there are numerous media screens within our surrounding. This ranges from the television sets in our houses, computer monitor at the office, mobile phones and MP3 players in our pockets and handbag.

Even when shopping or waiting to board a plane you’re most probably staring on screens with entertainment media (Soukup, 2008, p.5). Heavy marketing has been adopted by producers of mobile technologies targeting the consumers who possess mobile phones with picture and video capacity (Goggin, 2006, p.170).

Media texts producers have termed the mobile media as a “third screen” a device that consumers carry around with much ease. Unlike television screens broader communication networks has been integrated in personal computers and mobile phones (Goggin, 2006, p.9).

The train, buses and airplanes have been dominated by mobile screens providing passengers with entertainment as well as other media content especially the advertisements (Caron & Carona, 2007, p.17). With a lot of commercial media content the preferences of people changes in their everyday lives.

The world of popular media has become chaotic with hundreds of television channels to choose from, thousands songs ready for download and not forgetting millions of web pages to surf.

The emergence of social media like facebook and twitter has enabled people to manage interactions and relationship with many friends. Technologies have impacted on interpersonal communication enabling people to interact more often than before.

In addition to reducing distance between people online communication with tools like facebook and twitter enable people to keep track of their contacts with friends and are more aware of the last time they interacted with them. Online communication now incorporates more than one mode of contact to include text, voice and body language.

Mobile phone is a device that has always been seen as connecting people who are far apart thus overcoming the geographical distance between them. The number of mobile phone users has continued to increase substantially. The mobile phone has been integrated as part of people lives in the sense that it’s available and easy to use keeping us connected to our families, friends and business people (Ling, 2004, p.21-24).

The how and when way we use our mobile phones impacts on our communication not only to those we’re communicating to but also the people within our proximity. At this point, it is paramount to note the changes that have taken place and that have allowed the adoption of mobile phones. The tremendous proliferation of this device has drastically changed the traditional communication model.

Who are the users of mobile phones and for what purposes do they use them for? Has there been any change in the way mobile phone facilitates communication? How has the face to face interaction been affected by mobile calls? Has mobile communication enhanced relationships?

These are some of the questions that arise when we try to fathom the way communication has affected our personal and professional lives. There are sentiments that mobile phones have reduced humans to be emotionless beings.

There no doubt about the revolution brought about the use of mobile phones in the way we communicate. There have been different perceptions among individuals and social levels in the society in regards to mobile usage.

When we had fixed telephone lines that were put in a booth, telephones were seen as a business tools only and were placed in a fixed quiet environment. There was restriction when it came to teenagers using these phones (Agar, 2003). The ‘birth’ of mobile phones brought changes and phone calls became a habit to many irrespective of age or location.

Today, people can use mobile phones wherever they are in private or in public. People have been addicted to their mobile phones more than any other gadget known to man with the device remaining on throughout. Its portability enables people to carry it wherever they go (Castells, 1996).

A personal virtual network has been created whereby users can be available at all times to communicate with friends, family and colleagues. The geographical barrier has been destroyed making people feel close to one another and the face to face communication has been rendered rather less important with this mediated communication (Richard, 2004, p.22).

Meetings and briefings have become obsolete with the communication being mediated by a computer or a phone. The mobile SMS (short messaging service) service and internet has become the most preferable communication channels for most of teenagers and young people all over the world (Plant, 2000, p.23).

There are places where mobile phones have become taboo devices, places like church and crucial corporate meetings. At such places mobile ring is seen as a nuisance. In other scenarios it is seen as a destructive device by acting as a third party and especially to dating couples who want to have a private conversation.

Any phone ring is seen as an ‘intruder’ and this harms the relationship between the partners (Plant, 2000, p.29). In his research, Plant observes that there are those people who use mobile as ‘a means of managing privacy where calls are carefully selected’. He categorizes this group of people as ‘hedgehogs’.

The other category is those people who use mobile phones as key central part of their life. They become so attached to the device and cannot do without it. Plant referred this group as ‘fox’. They are regular users who need to feel connected with their families and friend. Their life will be dreadful if they lack the device (2000, p.32).

Telephones have promoted the use of text messaging and modernization since it’s allowing people to communicate more both verbally and texting in a more convenience and efficient way. SMS has made communication to be more immediate ad users can customize the message at ease with the various applications installed in their mobiles (Richard, 2004, p. 100).

The advanced phones have email support as well as multimedia messages making chatting become a lifestyle to many who conduct business and those initiating intimate communication. It has emerged that SMS has made people become more united.

Users have developed abbreviated messages which are now universally accepted as an appropriate language. The initial purpose of the phone to make calls has even lost taste with many people especially to the young generation.

According to Reid &Reid, more than 85% of teenagers prefer texting to talking on their mobile usage (Reid & Reid, 2004, p.1). There is ease of communication when it comes to texting in the sense that some formalities are eliminated making communication more personal.

Texting has helped the introverts who may lack skills to have phone conversation allowing them to express their true self towards other people leading to greater understanding and stronger relationships (Reid & Reid, 2004, p.8).

The use of mobile technology has affected the personalities of people to a great extent. Today, more people are hiding their feelings, and whereabouts behind mobile phones and this has raised suspicions among families, friends and couples.

People go through text messages of others just to find out more about the individual who might even have no clue about what is happening. Contrary to this most people believe that mobile is so crucial in enhancing relationship between persons no matter the distance and that it bond us together more than it separate us (Plant, 2000, p.58).

The usage of mobile phones by children and teenagers has changed the way parents bring up their kids. Parenting has really changed as the parents try to increase their surveillance and monitor their children mobile usage.

Their concern is to know who communicate with their kinds and the kind of conversations they normally have. They are worried about the kind of social network the children create in their contact list.

With the emergence of virtual communities, the influence of mobile phones has spilled over and affects parenting in general. Nonetheless, the primary purpose of mobile phones to facilitate communication has not changed.

There is no doubt that technology has changed the way human communicate. Great impacts can be seen in the way communication has changed the social structures of our society at all levels. Even in years to come, technology remains the driving force of the way people interacts.

The advancement of technology ensures that the communication is quicker and that more people remain connected. There has been evolution in interpersonal skills with the advancement of technology and users should always been keen in adapting to new ways of communication.

Technology has continually brought new methods of communications leading to the expansion of the mediated communication. The reality of having one messaged shared across a huge audience (mass communication) is now with us. A situation where neither time nor geographical can limit the accessibility of information.

We have seen the merging together of newspapers and books with computer technology so that the frequency and ease of reporting information and advertisements can be increased. The exposure of both individuals and society to the mediated communication has therefore affected our daily lives particularly on our culture and the way we communicate.

Modern Technology and Everyday Life

Technology has altered the way people experience the world and how they go about their lives. Personal computers, mobile phones, CCTV cameras, and GPS systems, among other forms of technology, have directly affected human life. The internet, in particular, has revolutionized human experiences.

This paper evaluates the benefits and challenges of technology on human life.

Code Projected Over Woman

When the internet came about some decades ago, different groups of people and organizations reacted differently to the concept. Some saw an opportunity to connect to a global village in terms of business and relationships. Other people were cautious at first, pointing to certain repercussions such as internet pornography and cybercrime. Today, technology has grown even more with new inventions in major sectors.

One of the most significant ways technology has elevated human life is enhanced communication. Individuals can send and receive messages anywhere and everywhere in real-time. Instead of picking up a phone to call someone or spending time and money to meet somewhere physically far, smartphones have made it possible for people to hold virtual chats.

Social media has made communication more convenient and efficient. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and many other such sites enable people to instantly share information, including news and pictures. An event occurring in a remote part of Thailand or on a mountain in Switzerland can be streamed live.

Businesses have benefited immensely from the World Wide Web as well. Many firms have cut costs and experienced steady growth in profits because less manual labor is needed to accomplish tasks, with robots and machines taking over operations. Employees can work from home, allowing them more freedom and flexibility. Video conferencing, for instance, has made it possible for people to reduce time and travel costs. Meetings involving participants across various parts of the world can be held online. Online banking has made it easier for people to make financial transactions from the safety of their homes, and to pay for goods and services at physical and online stores without necessarily carrying cash.

The World Wide Web has also changed the dynamics of dating. A man in London can date ten girls from ten different countries, and set up an online meeting with each of them at different times of the day. It could lead to a marriage or a string of casual arrangements.

The local libraries have also become emptier due to the advent of e-books. Students can access resources from around the globe to further their education. At the same time, our experience of entertainment has been elevated. Mobile entertainment is now possible as television and radio are integrated into smartphones, tablets, and even on laptops. GPS services have made driving easier and CCTV cameras have made home safety more achievable. Also, newer technologies such as artificial intelligence and 3D printing have added to human independence.

On the downside, technology is eroding the collective morals of society. So many pedophiles and sociopaths from all over the world have gotten involved in Internet pornography. With these restricted sites being easily accessible, marriages are crumbling. Human trafficking, prostitution, drug trafficking, and other social evils have likewise been facilitated by technological devices.

Finally, terrorist groups have turned to the internet to spread their message of hatred and violence. They have shifted the marketing strategy into digital recruitment, so they are amassing followers from around the globe through websites and social media. We also have the advent of cybercrime. Online bank accounts are now more vulnerable than before, and billions of dollars are lost annually.

Cybercrime also perpetuates racism and hatred as hackers spread negative social, political, and religious messages to their targets. Furthermore, artificial human intelligence poses a threat to the human race. It is argued that robots will, at one point, completely phase out the role of human beings in some sectors. The possibility of cloning and gene editing has also been the subject of many-a-hot-debate.

When it comes to technology, there are both benefits and costs. But overall, it is more beneficial than destructive. As long as governments and other regulatory bodies play their roles in ensuring that security is not compromised and that people’s freedoms are not trampled on, technology will continue to benefit humankind.

How Technology Has Changed Our Lives For The Worst

It is easy to praise information technology for the many ways it has helped society today. With the way that it has eased the burden on communicating and many other daily functions, it is safe to say that these technological advancements have many positive effects that make lives easier.

However, as with any innovation, new ideas and advances come at a price. The negative impact of technology can also be felt in different areas of society today. While the Internet’s very high speeds have allowed us to access information faster, it has also led to its excessive use, creating an army of users who spend hours online being unproductive.

Various unethical practices have also emerged from new technology. Pornography and child trafficking have become common ailments plaguing the population, with most transactions happening online. Cybercrime has become rampant, leaving many naive and unsuspecting users with hacked bank accounts or social media accounts. Creative copywriting has also become a hot topic, with plenty of graphics being digitally manipulated and passed off as someone else’s work.

I hope that more government authorities and regulatory bodies will have better oversight over these technological advancements.

What Are Pros Of Technology?

Life with technology comes with many perks. The biggest ones are speed and convenience. In an increasingly busy world where everything demands your time, any innovation that can cut down your use of precious time and energy is a welcome addition to your lifestyle. Certain technologies also elevate your way of working. What would have once taken you hours to jot down on a pen and paper now takes half an hour to complete on a laptop. Different software apps also enable you to do tasks that you may not necessarily be skilled at doing, such as graphic design. It is also easier to run errands and complete transactions in a secure and convenient way.

What Are Cons Of Technology?

Many of the downsides in these welcome advancements are attributed to the degrading of society’s moral compass. With the Internet comes the possibility of identity theft, where someone could easily take your name and photo and pretend to be you. There is also creative theft, where your digital work could be manipulated with minor tweaks and be sold as someone else’s work. At the extreme end of the spectrum are heavy cyber crimes such as cyber terrorism and child trafficking.  These have all found their own spots on the World Wide Web and have attracted their own audiences, which are massive. They have found creative ways to hibernate online so that they are not tracked and caught. There’s plenty of illegal activity happening online.

Technology In Our Life Today And How It Has ...

Over the years, technology has revolutionized our world and daily lives. Additionally, technology for seniors has created amazing tools and resources, putting useful information at our fingertips.

Modern technology has paved the way for multi-functional devices like the smartwatch and the smartphone. Computers are increasingly faster, more portable, and higher-powered than ever before. With all of these revolutions, technology has also made our lives easier, faster, better, and more fun.

group of colleagues using their smart phones

In this article, we’ll cover how technology has enhanced the quality of life for seniors lives in and out of the home. Technology’s advancements have provided quicker ways to communicate through instant messaging apps and social media platforms. Seniors are able to keep in touch with loved ones, while caregivers have new avenues to check in on aging parents or patients.

Technology has also given us brand new devices in recent decades, like smartwatches, tablets, and voice assistant devices. With these devices, we can do things like transfer money instantly and make purchases for everything from clothes, food delivery, groceries, furniture, and more. Technology has changed how we entertain ourselves, meet each other, and consume all types of media. It’s made fun advancements, but it’s also made important advancements in safety when it comes to home security and medical devices.

Those struggling with hearing loss can now benefit from  hearing aids , or  TV Listening Devices  that allow them to comfortably listen to their favorite programs with ease.

Especially for seniors, these devices are providing the freedom to age in place, to live independently, and to continue moving through everyday life with peace of mind. It opens up new opportunities by helping with safety, mobility and connectivity. Medical advancements have made it so you can stay proactive with conditions like diabetes and arthritis. With new medical alert devices, seniors can also get help at the push of a button and keep in touch with loved ones no matter where they are in the world.

Since there are so many new technologies to keep track of, it can seem overwhelming to adapt. However, all of these new technologies are designed to make your life easier. Even though it may not feel intuitive, learning how to use smart phones, smartwatches and voice assistants just takes a little bit of instruction and practice.

Four-in-ten seniors now own smartphones, more than double the share that did in 2013.

When it comes to the way we communicate overall, modern technology has had a powerful influence.

Digital technology has changed what people term as “media.” The influence of new technology on media is apparent since a media company isn’t necessarily a news platform anymore. A media company is now any company that helps pass information across the globe, including social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

The amount of active web users globally is now near 3.2 billion people.  That is almost half of the world’s population. Every day, two million smartphones are sold around the world, and the amount of information we share shared on social media networks is phenomenal.

how technology has changed living for seniors

Social media isn’t the only big statement digital technology has made. Neither is social media the only way technology has had an impact in everyone’s life.

Modern technology has made it possible for the discovery of many multi-functional devices like the smartwatch and the smartphone.

Before mobile technology, you had to search through a dictionary to understand the meaning of a word. Now you can look words up in a dictionary app or quickly search the Internet. Beyond words, you can search for practically anything on the Internet using search engines like Google and Bing.

how technology has changed our world

There is no denying that the future of technology will continue to revolutionize our lives. In a few years, driverless cars may be the norm for everyone, and robots will be commonplace in factories. Future technology is sure to transform our lives in unbelievable ways, but here we  highlight the many common ways technology is changing our lives today.

Technology Has Changed How We Communicate

In addition to social media platforms, there are also many other applications specifically designed for communication.

How has technology helped communication? The advancement of technology has made communication unbelievably fast and convenient. It’s incredible to look back and see how much easier communication has gotten over the years. Communication tools offer one of the most significant examples of how quickly technology has evolved.

In the past, writing a letter, sending faxes, or finding a wired telephone was the best way to communicate remotely with someone. To connect with someone in society today, you have many more efficient options at your fingertips. You can send them a message on social media, text them, video chat, email, or put a call through.

These new methods can help you keep in touch with loved ones, especially if you’re aging in place or living alone. Video chat helps caregivers check on seniors who may not need continual check-ups in person. Social media is a great way to keep in touch in general, allowing you to see what your loved ones are doing through the photos and updates they post.

technology has changed how we communicate

Social Media

Who hasn’t heard of Facebook, Twitter, or Skype? They’ve become household names. Even if you don’t use these platforms, they’re a part of everyday life and not going away anytime soon. Regardless of your location, messages via social media get delivered on these platforms at the same rate and speed whether the recipient is right beside you or on the other side of the globe. You can also send voice messages through these platforms, and it is delivered in nanoseconds.

Messaging Apps

The way we use mobile phones has changed dramatically as well. In addition to social media platforms, there are numerous other applications specifically designed for communication. If social media isn’t for you, WhatsApp and other messaging apps enable you to quickly message family and friends and even make calls over Wi-Fi.

You can email through your phone or send SMS text messages through your mobile provider, but many smartphones have their own messaging platforms built directly into the phone. On Apple iPhones, iMessage allows you communicate with anyone else who has an iPhone for free using WiFi or cellular data. iMessage has gotten increasingly sophisticated over the years. Sending photos, videos and emojis are just the basics with what you can do, and the platform has now expanded to include gaming, voice notes, and various app integrations to send information more quickly.

Messaging Apps can be a great option if you have friends in other countries or if you don’t have a phone plan.

The Evolution Of  Medical Alert System Technology

Within the last decade, medical emergency response systems have seen some impressive advancements, both in terms of technology and in safety measures that have made seniors feel safer than ever before. One of the earliest and most important advancements has been the introduction of mobile medical alert systems. These systems allow users the freedom to leave their homes and live their normal lives, while still having the peace of mind that emergency help is available in case of an emergency. Several devices, such as the  Medical Guardian Mobile  2.0, allow users to set up a network of emergency contacts who can also view their whereabouts and be notified in case of an emergency.

Recent advancements in medical alert technology also include a built-in fall detection feature. With this feature, special sensors in your medical alert pendant automatically detect when a fall occurs and send an alert to your monitoring call center. With new GPS and cellular technology, the operator can then determine where you fell, regardless of whether you can communicate your whereabouts or know the address. This technology allows the operators to then send emergency medical assistance to you more quickly, thus providing a great sense of security for yourself and your loved ones.

Hearing Aids Improve Quality Of Life

The use of hearing aids allows people to maintain a happy, healthy life by reducing the strain caused by reduced hearing ability. According to a  study facilitated by the Better Hearing Institute , eight out of 10 hearing aid users report being satisfied with the changes that their hearing aids have made in their lives. Hearing aids allow users to engage in common daily activities that would otherwise be far more difficult – or even impossible– such as talking, watching TV and listening to music.  Hearing aids  can also help you have a better quality of life by assisting you in:

Smartwatches

Communication has even evolved beyond mobile devices and personal computers. We can now send messages through tablets, voice assistants, smartwatches, and more. The smartwatch is a relatively new technology that captures almost all the capabilities of smartphones in a convenient touch-screen watch. You can receive notifications, track your activity, set alarms, and even call and text directly through these wearable devices.

Senior Man using MobileHelp Smart Watch Menu

Smartwatches can also serve as a way to communicate with emergency responders. Medical alert companies like  MobileHelp  and  Medical Guardian  have partnered with smartwatch developers or created proprietary technologies to provide seniors the safety of a medical alert right on their wrist. These watches include many of the same features as a typical smartwatch, such as activity tracking and personal messaging.

Even the makers of popular smartwatches on the market outside of the medical alert industry providing people the ability to communicate quickly in the case of an emergency. The Apple Watch Series 4 and its subsequent versions have built-in fall detection, which will automatically alert emergency assistance. In addition to its automatic response capabilities, Apple Watch technology also allows users to initiate an emergency call from any location worldwide manually. Apple’s Medical ID Health app can provide emergency responders access to your medical conditions and designated emergency contacts.

Technology allows us to communicate instantly with people in our neighborhoods or around the globe. This innovation not only keeps us connected but can help us live safer and healthier lives.

Make Sure Your Loved Ones Are Safe At Home

Updating your home is the first step toward aging in place comfortably. Professional home care services help seniors stay healthy at home.

Make Sure your Loved Ones are Safe at Home

Technology has changed how we pay bills and transfer money.

No more do you have to enter a bank to withdraw money or transfer it to someone. Many banks have already made transactions possible online and accessible to people everywhere. Companies like PayPal and Venmo have created platforms where people can send and receive money from any location using the Internet.

Paying bills has also become simplified thanks to technology. You can automatically schedule payments when they are due rather than having to remember to mail a check. With your cell phone and a banking app, you can manage all of your necessary bill payments online.

Setting up automated payments through a banking app is especially helpful for seniors who may have memory problems. Caregivers or loved ones can help set up recurring bill payments so there’s never a question if a bill will be paid on time or not.

Technology has changed money

It’s even simple to pay for things using only your smartphone. With Apple Pay and Google Wallet, you don’t need to carry cash when you go shopping. These apps securely link your bank account to your mobile phone. The same machines you use to swipe your credit card at the store now allow mobile payments from your phone.

Keeping up with all of these innovations may seem like a hassle, but these technologies can simplify your life to help you worry about fewer things. With all of the payment capabilities available these days, you could leave home without your wallet and be just fine.

Technology Has Changed How We Watch TV

Technology has changed how we watch television today. Cable companies are continuously rolling out new features allowing viewers to pause and rewind live TV and record their favorite programs to watch later.

Features and Specifications

With your mobile devices, you can watch, or “stream” the tv shows you want, when you want, and how you want. Streaming services like  Netflix ,  Hulu , and  Amazon Prime   Video  all offer access to cable TV shows and original content for a low monthly price. Disney is also getting into the streaming game, with the recent announcement of their new streaming service  Disney+ . Streaming is just another way to watch your favorite shows, but it uses the Internet instead of cable. It can be a more cost-effective way to watch television. Unlike traditional cable tv packages, you don’t have to pay for large cable bundles with channels you don’t use. Streaming services offer movies and TV shows that are grouped by genre, making it easy to find your favorites.

With streaming, you can watch on the go – all you need is an Internet connection. Many of the streaming services we listed above have mobile applications that allow you to download content directly to your device. This option allows you to watch even if you go somewhere without Internet access.

tech has changed the way we watch tv

More and more TVs these days are even designed for streaming. “Smart TVs” have Wi-Fi capability, which allows them to connect to streaming services using the Internet. Smart TVs will enable you to access more programs and even save money. With a Smart TV, you can access both streaming services and cable channels. To save money, you can also opt-out of cable altogether. It all depends on your budget and what you enjoy watching.

New TVs are also capable of displaying picture quality far beyond what you’ve experienced in the past. A standard definition TV displays 720 horizontal pixels. Today, it’s more common for TVs to have 4k resolution, which is 4,000 horizontal pixels. That means TVs today show a picture with nearly 6x more definition than standard-definition TVs making for a much better viewing experience and can make your favorite shows and movies that much more enjoyable.

Seniors who suffer from hearing loss can benefit from using a  TV Listening Device  that provides superior sound quality, enhancing the overall TV viewing experience.

How Has Technology Changed Other Forms Of Entertainment?

Paper books aren’t going anywhere. However, e-reader devices have made reading easier when you’re on the go. An e-reader device like a Kindle or Nook can hold thousands of books without taking up space in your home. It’s a great way to have multiple options on hand if you’re going on a trip or vacation.

Audio books are an especially great way to enjoy classic and new books alike. Though you’re not reading, you’re still able to consume a great story through an audiobook. For aging seniors, audio books are great when it becomes more challenging to read the small type in books.

technology has changed how we read

When it comes to music, technology has also helped consolidate the devices we use. We can access our music no matter where we are. In the same vein as books, vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, and other physical albums will always have their place. They serve a unique purpose in enjoying music. However, just as it’s possible to stream movies and TV shows, you can also stream your favorite songs and albums.

Platforms like Spotify and Apple Music have made it possible to access millions of artists all at a monthly fee. While it isn’t the same as owning your favorite album, streaming allows you the opportunity to listen to music easily. The number of devices with music streaming capabilities continues to grow. You can use your smartphone, computer, car, portable speakers, and even TVs to listen to your favorite songs.

Technology Has Changed How We Date

How has the Internet improved our lives? One way is through the ease of meeting new people.

With the proliferation of online dating sites, you can register on a website, find a match, and start to communicate at your own pace. Many people don’t meet face to face until they decide there is a connection. This vetting helps you prioritize your time and protect your privacy while still getting to know someone new.

With the proliferation of online dating sites, you can register on a website, find a match and start to communicate at your own pace.

For better or worse, technology has also made it possible for you to find other people’s personal information on the Internet through social media. You can gain access to the information you want to know about a particular person. Some people who aren’t used to social media may view this as an unnecessary new part of life. However, it’s helpful to get to know people and keep up with them through busy schedules. Especially for seniors, online dating is useful during a stage of life where it’s typically more challenging to meet new people.

Online dating platforms have millions of registered users and have received lots of good reviews from every part of the world. Dating platforms have helped people connect with their matches in a way where neither party has to waste the other person’s time. It is comfortable, straightforward, safe, and it works.

Technology Has Changed How We Live In and Outside of Our Homes

The internet of things allows everyday objects to be synced to the internet through Wi-Fi.

How Does The Internet Of Things Work With Home Devices?

All of the technology mentioned above has been made possible because of the Internet. New websites, platforms, and applications will continue to revolutionize the way we live our lives. However, the latest Internet technology isn’t always accessible on screens, and it’s called the Internet of Things (IoT). The Internet of Things allows everyday objects to be synced up to the Internet through Wi-Fi. This synching makes their usual functions accessible remotely and automated through data available on the world wide web. It may sound complicated, but it’s the same technology we’ve been using for years, just now accessible through different objects.

The  Internet of Things  can help to significantly improve aging in place and at-home safety, especially for seniors living with conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis. IoT devices are designed to monitor health at home, aid with mobility, and provide continuous monitoring.

Some examples of objects that use IoT today include driverless cars, fitness trackers like Fitbit, thermostats, and doorbells. Objects that use IoT are also commonly referred to as smart objects (think of smart TVs).

We’ll use the example of a  smart thermostat  to describe how it works. By connecting to the Internet, you’re able to use a smart thermostat remotely through your computer or smartphone. These systems usually have their own applications that you can open and control no matter where you are. For example, what if you’d like to cool the house down while you’re away? All you would have to do is open the smart thermostat app to tell it what to do.

thesis statement on how technology has changed the world

Because these devices are so “smart,” you usually don’t need to do much when using them. The sensors on these thermostats are specifically designed to optimize your home for energy efficiency. Once you set your desired temperature, the thermostat can work on its own to keep your home at the best temperature. The thermostat won’t waste energy by staying on longer than needed.

Using Technology For Shopping

When you’re too busy or don’t want to leave home, online shopping is an easy way to buy what you need. You’re only a couple clicks away from getting the things you need thanks to the many options for online retail. There is no hassle and no need to make several trips to different stores.

If you aren’t as mobile as you used to be, online shopping makes it so everything you need can be delivered directly to your doorstep. While we still encourage as much daily exercise as possible, it can be too hectic and even hazardous sometimes for seniors to be out running so many errands.

Your average yard sale is even now online. With websites like  Craigslist  and  Facebook Marketplace , you can browse listings from people in your area. These are people who are looking to get rid of their used furniture, clothes, appliances, and more. Using these websites, you can view items based on what you need and your budget. Just like the technologies we listed above, these online marketplaces use secure payment methods that don’t require cash.

Using Voice Assistants

If smart devices seem overwhelming to you, there may be an easy solution: voice assistants. These include Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri. With a voice assistant, you can control all of the smart devices in your home and access the Internet by speaking voice commands. It’s as easy to use as having a conversation.

When it comes to shopping, these devices allow you to create a shopping list out loud and then have it automatically transferred to your phone. This makes the whole process easier for seniors with mobility issues with writing or who would rather speak out loud than make a list on a phone. Many of these devices even integrate directly with online shops. With the  Amazon Alexa , you can immediately make Amazon purchases without ever having to go online.

To make everything in your home easier to access, you can integrate your voice assistant with any smart device to make it accessible via your voice. If your home needs temperature adjusting or you want to turn some lights off, you can do it all through a series of simple voice commands.

Voice recognition for the elderly

They’re also handy to have inside your home for one of the most basic uses of the Internet – finding information. All you need to do is ask your voice assistant a question, and it will give you an answer found online.

Most phones these days are also equipped with different versions of voice assistants. If you’re hesitant about purchasing a unique voice assistant device, try testing out the software that lives on your phone. You can ask it to set reminders and alerts through your phone without having to search through settings. For seniors,  voice recognition software  can significantly improve the ability to live independently by making everyday tasks easier, aiding with medication reminders, and simply providing a more accessible, intuitive way to use technology.

Using Technology For Food Delivery

A lot of the technology we’ve already described helps make our lives easier by saving time and effort. Another example of this type of technology is food delivery. We all lead busy lives that could use some extra time. The ability to have things brought to your home is especially helpful for seniors or those with disabilities or sickness. One aspect of our lives that we often take for granted is the ability to head over to the grocery store.

Grocery Delivery

Food delivery can come in many different forms. Currently, many mobile apps allow you to order delivery from your favorite restaurants. We’re not talking about your standard pizza delivery. These apps pay people just like you to pick up takeout almost anywhere. A few examples of these apps include  Postmates ,  Uber Eats , and  DoorDash .

Many of these same apps and others offer grocery delivery, such as Instacart and Shipt. A lot of grocery stores like Walmart, Target, and Kroger even offer delivery or pick-up options. The  best grocery delivery plans for seniors  are helpful if you love to cook but can’t make it to the grocery store that often. It can also help if you find it difficult to leave the house but still want to make home-cooked meals.

technology has changed how we eat

Meal Kit Delivery

Lastly, you can also use subscription-based food delivery companies to get meals sent to your doorstep every week. These come in different forms. For example, companies like Blue Apron and HelloFresh deliver meal kits with all the ingredients for a set of recipes. It’s like getting customized groceries delivered with step-by-step instructions.  Meal kits can help seniors  by cutting out a lot of the preparation needed to make a meal. You still might need to do a little additional cutting and preparing, but it won’t be as intensive as going to the grocery store and starting from scratch.

Pre-Made Meal Delivery

If you don’t cook, some companies that deliver pre-made meals. Some examples of these companies include Magic Kitchen, Silver Cuisine, and The Good Kitchen. While frozen tends to mean less nutritious, these companies have put a lot of time and research into developing delicious recipes. They still taste great after being reheated yet also contain the nutritional value for different needs, including vegetarians, people with diabetes, and seniors. These options remove the need for time-consuming grocery shopping and cooking.

For seniors, it’s common to have particular nutritional needs as you age and start to live with deficiencies or conditions like diabetes.  Senior meal delivery companies  make it easy to stay healthy without sacrificing your mobility or personal time.

Using Technology In Transportation

Driverless cars have been in development for years, but this technology has yet to become commonplace. When it does, it will lead to fewer accidents on the road. It will also make transportation more accessible to everyone.  People will be able to use cars even if they have disabilities or live in areas without public transportation. Driverless cars will use sensors to understand when to brake, speed up, turn, and park.

Though this technology still has yet to be perfected, we’re already seeing examples of its early stages in most new cars today. Since the technology being used isn’t completely driverless yet, it’s called driver assist. Using cameras and sensors, this technology can help you park, detect blind spots, warn you if you’re merging into another lane, and even automate the entire parking process – even parallel parking.

technology has changed how we travel

Ride Sharing

Until the development of technology for driverless cars is ready, people will still be using planes, trains, and regular automobiles to travel. Technology has made some of these options more accessible. One of the most popular types of apps used today is for ride sharing. Popular ride sharing apps companies like  Lyft  and  Uber . The technology in their apps allows people to hail a ride from anywhere, just like a taxi cab. The best part about these apps is that the driver is trackable from a GPS map. Rides are also accessible nearly everywhere, even in areas where there usually aren’t any taxis. The companies let everyday people with modern cars apply to become drivers. Once they pass a background test, they’re eligible to start giving rides through the app.

Some people are hesitant to take rides from strangers. For your security, the apps have rating systems in place to ensure the drivers are doing their jobs well. The companies also continually update their security measures to make sure riders are safe.

Using The Gig Economy

Transportation apps like these are also an excellent way for  seniors to make some extra money through the gig economy . What is the gig economy? When you’re on the other side of the app as a driver, you can set your schedule to fit your lifestyle and take as many or as few rides as you’d like. Aside from money, taking on a gig job can help keep you active through using technology, communicating daily with customers, and getting out around your town.

Technology Has Changed How We Stay Safe

For seniors or people with disabilities, IoT devices are some of the best technologies for keeping them safe at home.

One of the best ways technology has changed our lives is in keeping us safer. Through technology, we’re living longer than ever before. While there have been countless technology advances in hospitals and medicine, there are also new technologies we can use at home. These enhance our everyday lives with safety and protection.

IoT Safety Devices

For seniors or people with disabilities, IoT devices are some of the best technologies for keeping them safe at home. One great example is  fall detection technology . Through wearables or floor and bed sensors, small devices are capable of knowing when someone falls. Once these sensors go off, caregivers are alerted through intercoms or mobile alerts.

Medical Alert Systems

Outside of IoT devices, simple medical alerts can keep the elderly or disabled safe. At its most basic level, a medical alert is usually a base station that comes with a wearable emergency button. The user presses the button when they need assistance, and a caregiver or loved one nearby is alerted to check on them.

Medical alert systems come as either monitored or non-monitored devices. A non-monitored device works as we described above, and a series of numbers are pre-programmed as emergency contacts. With non-monitored devices, you won’t be put in touch with 911 responders unless your emergency contacts call them for you.

Companies like  MobileHelp  and  Medical Guardian  provide monitored medical alert systems. These companies provide the medical alert equipment while also hosting a staff of remote monitoring operators (either outsourced or in-house). Typically, you don’t have to pay for the equipment, but the companies require a monthly fee to be able to provide the monitoring service.

Medical Guardian Medical Alert System

Monitored alert devices are a huge benefit to older adults or seniors staying home by themselves. The devices allow help to be only the click of a button away should family members or caregivers be too far or unable to assist. The monitored devices also sometimes come with connectivity apps so that family caregivers can stay up to date with senior care. The apps will show when emergency buttons are pressed and can also provide activity monitoring through home or wristband sensors.

Home Security Systems

Smart security systems at home can also keep you safe from intruders. When these alarms go off, they can begin recording with a camera around your home and will also alert security professionals. These systems also connect to an app that you can access on your phone. You can view live footage of what’s going on in your home or disable alarms remotely.

If you aren’t interested in a full security system, you can also make a one-time purchase on a security camera or security doorbell like Ring Doorbell and Nest Camera. These require easy installation to your front door and work by providing direct notifications to your home when it senses someone’s there. There’s even an intercom built in so you can communicate with visitors and see them through the camera without having to open the door.

For seniors who live alone, these simple devices offer much-needed security and can be especially helpful for seniors who aren’t always able to frequently get up and open the door.

How Technology Continues to Change

Technology is rapidly evolving to help seniors age in place as well as to help improve productivity and wellbeing for all. Some of the latest innovations for seniors include medical alert smartwatches, touch-screen systems, and wearable activity trackers.

Companies like MobileHelp and Medical Guardian offer  smartwatch medical alerts  for on-the-go safety and touch-screen alert systems to use in the home. These new technologies are designed to provide quick assistance and complete connectivity to keep seniors and their loved ones well-informed.

While these technologies are currently still reactive, innovations continually help them to be even more proactive. Some smartwatch companies have already incorporated  ECGs into their products  to monitor heart rate and detect abnormalities, which can help get people to the doctor well before it’s too late.

Medical technology alone is beginning to give more and more patients hope with  customizable medicine  and new non-invasive procedures to help with diagnosis.

When it comes to technology designed for the greater good, we also see vast improvements and innovations. Although already used in factories and militaries, Robots are beginning to work more efficiently and human-like than ever before.  Robots are being built to have impressive dexterity  allowing them to move objects and themselves faster and smoother.

There are many more ways in which technology has changed the way we live. These are just some of the fundamental ways technology is influencing and transforming our world.

The revolutions that will surface in years to come will continue to make profound changes in our everyday lives. The continual changes can be hard to keep up with, especially for seniors. Luckily, there is a lot of new technology for seniors that is specifically designed to be helpful and easy to use. Rather than being overwhelmed, embrace technology to discover how it can enhance and become an essential part of your daily life. Learning how to  become a tech-savvy senior can be done in as little as ten days . All you need is some persistence, help, and knowledge of the basics.

How Technology Has Changed Communication?

Introduction.

Social networks have made communication simpler, faster and better by enhancing accessibility in both social and business fields. Millions of people use social network sites to carry out financial transactions surf the net as well as carry out financial banking. Unlike use of hi-tech computer programs, social networks require minimal internet knowledge. Such networks have enabled individuals stay in touch with fiends and families and share unlimited information as well as interests.

Additionally, professionals in human services and social workers have greatly benefitted from social networks since it has facilitated exchange of information, exchange of knowledge and access to empirical data (Mika 29). Social networks are also utilized by business people to communicate and to make transactions. In business social networks, entrepreneurs augment their potential profits through online adverts and word of mouth.

However, social networks have quite a number of pitfalls. Even though these networks enable users to relay important data, conduct online conversations, share information on bulletin boards and also retrieve information, it is quite cumbersome to reveal the exact identity of users since personal details may be changed any time based on preferences. Users who conceal their identity during communication may exploit merits of this domain. For instance, such users may opt to post information that is not suitable.

It is imperative to note that social networks are vital for learning. The use of social networks has become a global phenomenon among students. What used to be a technological tool has turned into a popular social tool and a form of electronic communication that many students from various backgrounds have used in institutions of learning, in enhancing family relationships and even among themselves (Grant & Meadows 215).

How technology has changed communication

Thesis statement.

Even though social networking is powerful and helpful development in communication bearing in mind that it has made communication simpler and faster, cases of cyber-bullying from users who hide their true identities behind monitors has been on the increase. It is an issue of concern since inasmuch as it does not involve direct physical contact, its effect on individuals preyed upon is grave than actual contact and as such, may lead to suicide and depression.

The use of mobile phones, digital and interactive technologies as well as the internet by cyber users to target other people with the aim of making them feel embarrassed, humiliated, harassed, threatened and tormented amounts to cyber-bullying. Research studies indicate that cyber-bullying begun with the introduction of worldwide web. Through this, individuals were able to connect with each other through social networks.

The study on how technology has changed communication is interesting since it touches on all aspects of society especially on how individuals relate. This study attempts to explore how modern communication has been modified by highlighting merits and demerits of social networks as well as other areas of importance affected by social networking.

To begin with, it is imperative to note that social networking has become a favorite method of communication among countless number of people including teenagers and adults. Unfortunatey, the varied groups of users have been and as such, they have been negatively impacted.

Therefore, this study topic is of great interest since it provides an opportunity to learn how contemporary communication has been affected by emergence of social networks bearing in mind that communication is a crucial aspect that any given society cannot do without. For example, one of the important issues of concern that have been brought about by social networks and which this essay has explored in depth is cyber-bullying,

Emotionally distressing issues are common among children and teenagers today and according to sociologists, quite a significant percentage of these individuals find it cumbersome to come face to face or talk frankly about their emotional distress and would rather turn to social networks. It is interesting to observe that social networks provide a channel through which they can overcome fear while presenting their issues.

This has also been seen in schools where shy students who cannot speak in public actively participate in class discussions done online. However, this too plays a role in affecting their relationship with each other since some use it to bully others. Consequently, it negatively impacts on their capacity to interact well with others.

While users tend to enjoy the new approach of communicating through social networks, the latter, as aforementioned, has also led to cyber bullying such that users are more wary when interacting with unfamiliar people. Some users perceive modern communication (social networks) such as use of Facebook and twitter to be unsafe (Bahk et al 73).

There are tendencies towards bullying of children or other adolescents causing them to suffer from fear, anxiety and depression. Recent research studies have indicated that cyber bullying can cause potential harm through serious consequences more than just psychosomatic symptoms or suicide.

Cyber-bullying

Technology is a phenomenon which has transformed our society in both excellent and awful ways. Other than the fact that social networks can be used for communication, to do various assignments, perform educational functions and other diverse functions, it is without doubt that it carries with it threats that most people are not aware of. To start with, before social networks came into place, communication was executed in specific areas like in homes or offices where phones were stationary and attached to a table or a wall.

This has drastically changed, and social network sites are now common in society. Individuals can access their friends and families through social network applications such as Facebook found in their computers and phones (Brynko 11). As such, they are able to use this technology anywhere and at anytime to communicate.

However, children or teens use social networks to target their fellows. Instances of cyber-bullying instigated by a teenager against another are on the rise and some of its grievous and diverse effects on victims include embarrassment, humiliations, harassments, threats and torments (Harris & Harris 292).

This important tool of communication has indeed changed the way individuals relate. Instead of it being a channel of proper communication, it provides a cover where a cyber-bully hides to post embarrassing and rude posts using lewd language.

Communication through social networks has virtually changed modern society and way of life. Preteens, teens or children are able to pass information to friends in terms of online conversations, text messages or e-mail. According to research studies done in the recent past, many people have expressed their like for social network as a means of communication and have lauded it for its efficiency. This could be due to social impacts that this mode has on the society. (Fuery 10).

This greatly affects the well being of individuals. However, this technology has turned a mode of communication into a theatre of war where bullies and victims- since roles keep changing- trade hurtful words (Papacharissi 60). The impact after such an incident has been either children committing suicide or killing each other. Inasmuch as it beneficial to many, it is imperative to underscore the fact that it causes social disorder (Fuery 10).

Another issue posing a problem to communication is threats by social networks. The debilitating and confusing information can be due to effects cyber-bullying children are exposed to and lack of coherent array of information (Anon 2).

Information in form of threats has dangerous effects in the life of children and teenagers as it can cause potential disastrous consequences from ill-founded decisions, misunderstandings that may cause depressions and suicides and other related issues (Kilduff & Tsai 73). Children who like social networks least understand the possible effects of social disorder that cyber-bullying in through social networks can cause.

To sum up, as already mentioned, internet predators that hide behind the safety of a computer screen have preyed on their victims through threats and intimidations (Rizavi et al 907). Individuals send written forms of communication and online voice calls to other members making them anonymous to them and thereby harassing and causing them harm. This can prove to be harmful to the teens that still need guidance and are unaware of the dangers of the predators.

What are the causes of the problem

Research studies have pointed out a myriad of issues and a thread bare analysis of the causes of cyber-bullying among children and adolescents. Among those issues include revenge, the fact that an individual enjoys anonymity, control or power and ignorance. The latter is by all means true since most children and teenagers lack knowledge of the impact their words have on others.

They use lewd language to generate some excitement or to kill dullness. The issue of exercising power and control over others among teens and children is another cause of cyber-bullying aimed at satisfying the ego of bullies.

Additionally, children would be free to post anything on the internet to bully others when they know they are anonymous. The fact that they are not being watched gives them confidence against any chance of being found and of any immediate consequence.

Finally, like adults, children and teenagers also display the nature of revenge. Miserable children often look for means to get back at others who have ostracized them. As a matter of fact, since children don’t maintain friendships for long, there is a high chance that revenge can cause a vicious cycle of cyber-bullying.

Proposed solutions and who can help

Due to the aforementioned problems such as identity theft, harmful conversation from unscrupulous people and cyber bullying from social networks sites such as Facebook and Twitter, it is important that appropriate measures to tackle this problems be put in place by both parents and teachers in learning institutions. Some of the proposed solutions for this study involve the participation of parents, teachers in schools and the young people.

First, children in learning institutions involved in cyber-bullying should be thoroughly disciplined. However, this poses a challenge to learning institutions when children are out of school and as such any form of discipline would be considered violation of children’s right of speech. These call for schools to work hand-in-hand with parents to curb cyber-bullying among children.

Secondly, parents should understand their children. Even though some children could be instigators of cyber-bullying, parents should be there for them when things go wrong. They should not under react, overreact or reject them. Being supportive will shield their children from harm caused by cyber-bullies. It will also provide an avenue for parents to guide their children on what is right.

The most viable is teenagers and children taking a stand against cyberbullying since it originates from them. They should be informed on the need to be careful when interacting with unfamiliar individuals (Rizavi et al 904). In case they feel uncomfortable and suspicious of the other communicator, it would be better to end that communication.

In summing up, it is vital to note that most people who interact through social networks may hide their true identities behind their computers, it is imperative for users not to lay an assumption that other communicators are who they claim to be.

Even though social networks are important for communication, personal information such as surname and location should not be given to strangers. Individuals should investigate social network sites they intend to use and incase of cyber bullying; the same should be reported to appropriate authority.

Thesis Statements

What this handout is about.

This handout describes what a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can craft or refine one for your draft.

Introduction

Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in the rest of your paper.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement:

If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively. (Check out our handout on understanding assignments for more information.)

How do I create a thesis?

A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading an essay assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis” that presents a basic or main idea and an argument that you think you can support with evidence. Both the argument and your thesis are likely to need adjustment along the way.

Writers use all kinds of techniques to stimulate their thinking and to help them clarify relationships or comprehend the broader significance of a topic and arrive at a thesis statement. For more ideas on how to get started, see our handout on brainstorming .

How do I know if my thesis is strong?

If there’s time, run it by your instructor or make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some feedback. Even if you do not have time to get advice elsewhere, you can do some thesis evaluation of your own. When reviewing your first draft and its working thesis, ask yourself the following :

Suppose you are taking a course on contemporary communication, and the instructor hands out the following essay assignment: “Discuss the impact of social media on public awareness.” Looking back at your notes, you might start with this working thesis:

Social media impacts public awareness in both positive and negative ways.

You can use the questions above to help you revise this general statement into a stronger thesis.

After thinking about your answers to these questions, you decide to focus on the one impact you feel strongly about and have strong evidence for:

Because not every voice on social media is reliable, people have become much more critical consumers of information, and thus, more informed voters.

This version is a much stronger thesis! It answers the question, takes a specific position that others can challenge, and it gives a sense of why it matters.

Let’s try another. Suppose your literature professor hands out the following assignment in a class on the American novel: Write an analysis of some aspect of Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn. “This will be easy,” you think. “I loved Huckleberry Finn!” You grab a pad of paper and write:

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel.

You begin to analyze your thesis:

Think about aspects of the novel that are important to its structure or meaning—for example, the role of storytelling, the contrasting scenes between the shore and the river, or the relationships between adults and children. Now you write:

In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore.

After examining the evidence and considering your own insights, you write:

Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.

This final thesis statement presents an interpretation of a literary work based on an analysis of its content. Of course, for the essay itself to be successful, you must now present evidence from the novel that will convince the reader of your interpretation.

There has been a lot of improvement in technology all over the years. The improvement in technology has led to people to shifting from analogue era to digital era in order to fit in the new life style. For approximately the last one hundred years, people lived without any advanced conveniences. I cannot imagine how miserable and unhappy people’s lives were. Since the first computer was invented fifty years ago, our quality of life and happiness have increased. In fact, the appearance of Internet helps us find information much easier.

Furthermore, the people that have a mental and physical disabilities would have more painful experiences without advanced medical techniques. Finally, the cell phone helps us to have better communication. Without computers, medical technology, and cell phones, modern life would not be as wonderful as now.

The opposition may believe that the weaknesses of these inventions can also cause fatal results. For instance, the appearance of Internet gives those ridiculous people a chance to make viruses or bad sites.

“ Ok, let me say I’m extremely satisfy with the result while it was a last minute thing. I really enjoy the effort put in. ”

It may be true that many teenagers and adults went to jail for misuse of the Internet, and caused themselves and others sadness. Nevertheless, each new invention usually causes two results, positive and negative. We should not forget the benefits of Internet, also. Secondly, the opposition also believes that the medical technology can kill patients accidentally. However, we cannot forget the lives it has saved. In addition, those medical tools help patients to have a happier life. Lastly, the opposition erroneously believes that the radiation of the cell phone affects us alot.

On the other hand, if there were no cell phones in this world, we probably would waste more time locating and communicating with others. In another words, if we waste more time on finding friends, our lifetime is shorter. The opposition believes that my three conveniences may cause trouble for us, but we should not forget we are also the beneficiaries.

The most successful convenience in the world is the computer because it is fast, and it is easy for us to use. For example, the incredible speed of Internet helps us to search for information faster. It is a great tool to help us save time. In addition, Internet is another communication tool, and we can create our own web site for others to comment. Moreover, the software in the computer does most of the work for us. That helps us to save material and time. For example, “Microsoft Word” helps us manage our essays easier. In my personal life, it helps me to fix my grammar mistakes. Furthermore, “Peachtree” and “QuickBooks” helps my mom to manage her bills and tax. Equally important, the email helps us send letters and greeting cards to others more often. Chatting online is a common hobby; therefore, the computer is another tool for us to make friends. Computers are wonderful tools to help us search, work, and communicate.

Medical technology decreases the deaths of people from disease or body impairment. For example, few years ago, if a person with sight disabilities, that was a problem for him. The poor technology in the early time was not good enough to treat people completely. On the other hand, we have our advanced medical techniques now. People are no more in pain, and they are all happy. Furthermore, the tools that were invented help patients to have an easier life. Audio phones, glasses, and wheelchair can help the people that have a physical disability live better. If someone has a mental impairment, we also have psychotherapy medicine to heal him or her. Finally, medical technology gives some college students an opportunity to study it. They can advance it, or even invent some new techniques. In addition, they get a chance to help people and make money. Therefore, to improve our medical technology is necessary for us to have a healthy life.

The cell phone is the best and smallest tool to communicate in this world. First, computers and cell phones both can help us communicate with others, but the cell phone is smaller than computer. Cell phones are not only advantageous on size; it also has a better voicing quality. Secondly, cell phones might be of more help in an emergency. It connects to the line faster than all the other communication tools. Furthermore, cell phones are necessary for students because we can communicate with parents and friends. Lastly, cell phones look cool, and it has many options. Some wireless companies give you free phones every year, and you can decorate it with ornaments. Cell phone’s fanciful options also help you show off yourself. Therefore, cell phone is a better tool to help our communication, and it is useful. Computer, medical technology, and cell phones are necessary for us to have. “One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.” This is a quote by Elbert Hubbard. From the quote, I see that technology not only soothes people’s pain, it also helps us to work faster. I insist my position that, each convenience’s appearance makes our life quality better than before.

As much as technology aids our lives, it also destroys them. Whilst FB messaging old friends, you’re losing time to spend going out with your current friends. Technology can lead to isolation and people lose the ability to communicate with one another face to face. People say things online that they would never say to your face. And when you get on a train or the tube, how many people sit there on their phones, IPods or I Pads completely oblivious to anything else? This is what the future could look like. With everyone walking around plugged in and on screens not interacting with reality. Technology enables us not to have to communicate with someone face to face we can simply email, text or message them online.

In conclusion, as we have seen above, nothing is perfect. Everything can be dark or bright; positive or negative. It depends on the way we deal with it, depending and using technology every day in our lives can cause a lot of problems as mentioned above, we just have to find a way to use it less than before and not to depend on it.
